If Trump isn't guilty of anything and there is no collusion as he claims, then why would he need to pardon himself?

MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Well... let's say that it turns out he lied... well not lied, but recalled things the wrong way and then made the necessary correction... well not a correction like he did something wrong, but... you know... had a new recollection. Yeah, it was just a new recollection. And, if that new recollection is... well... you know involved with things that he didn't originally remember, but that he did that might not have been legal... well I don't mean illegal, but could be seen by some people (maybe many people) that he did something wrong, well, wouldn't it be a good idea for him to be able to pardon himself? So... yeah...

@MistyCee True... but can we continue to enable with them with hand-holding for the rest of their voting lives?
@MarkPaul They resent that hand holding, too, which is part of the problem.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
@MistyCee That's true. They seem to have so much anger... perhaps some of it's justified. But, they resent hand-holding. They resent being ignored. And, they think they are accomplishing something great by buying into the lie.

Even if he IS guilty, who the fuck pardons themselves?!

@BlueMetalChick The POTUS - the mightiest man in this world. 😒

Trump believes he's above the law. He said it during the campaign, and he confirmed it today. People should take his word for it. Question: is this what his supporters expected when they voted for him? I recall the Trumpeters on SW screaming about how we're going to be distracted 24/7 with trials and investigations, if Hillary won.
@Northwest This idea of immediate impeachment troubles me, because it assumes a lot out of Congresspeople, some of whom have already demonstrated that their loyalty is to Trump over any thing else.

I get why Rudy said it, because it makes it sound absurd that Trump would do it and face that, but keep in mind, these people don't mind and in fact seem to rejoice in changing their "stories" to fit their daily desires, and it doesn't seem to bother their "base" when they lie.

If Trump were to pardon himself, however absurd that is, the idea that a Vichy Congress might decide not to impeach him seems less absurd.

@MistyCee Although the all idea sounds just weird - but I agree with you. 🙄🤦
@Loretta78 The whole idea is absurd. There's another post out here talking about 50 years of "DOJ precedents" regarding Presidential self pardons and some wacko crap about Hillary planning on pardoning herself.

It's SW, and I get that, but this is the kind of thing, like Pizzagate or birtherism, that Trump might pick up on and actually sell people who've been conditioned to believe he's always right and anyone who disagrees with him is part of a Globalist, or democrat, or libtard, or Muslim conspiracy.

Because the world makes a witch hunt at this poor, innocent guy... 😒

You will have to be careful with that irony.. A lot of Americans don't get it. :)🤔@Loretta78
Loretta78 · 46-50, F
@whowasthatmaskedman I've seen it already. I am glad that at least YOU got my irony! 😂😂
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
I suppose that would be a really good question...If we didn't already know the answer. Trumps business practices are well known. His recent family deals in China and India demonstrate practices that seriously call into question the ethics of his deals and we KNOW there is Russian and Chinese state controlled money propping up both his and other family members buildings in the US.. Now back in the good old days that would have been enough to get the anti Trust lawyers drooling.

it's not constitutionally possible for POTUS to pardon himself
katielass · F
@SW-User It's really a moot point but for argument's sake the constitution does not say one way or the other but doj has for 50+ years decided a president could pardon himself. That's been the policy. And this was discussed in Oct 2016 with regard to hitlery and the left wing consensus the was that she could pardon herself. Isn't it nice that someone in the media dragged all that out of the dust bin and reminded us about that.
@SW-User Says who? Does the constitution explicitly say the potus can't pardon himself? If it did I doubt there'd be so much debate over it right now. I did read this earlier. I'm sure this would piss a lot of people off if it happened.
A different approach to the pardoning problem could be taken under Section 3 of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. If the President declared that he was temporarily unable to perform the duties of his office, the Vice President would become Acting President and as such he could pardon the President. Thereafter the President could either resign or resume the duties of his office.”
@BlueMetalChick publicly and brazenly crossing lines of impeachment believing one operates with political and constitutional impunity (and clearly not understanding the difference) is bad for business, a shot will be fired at some point.
