Problem with laptop after adding a new battery and RAM

I have a 15 inch HP laptop.
It's about 2.5 years old and the battery began to die on me.
So, I bought a new one from amazon and added 8GB of RAM while it was open.

The battery lasts several hours when it is unplugged, and it processes much faster. Great!

But, sometimes the screen locks up. I can't move the cursor.
I have tried hitting function/insert and that works, but then a blue highlight expands over the page. If I move the page up and down it highlights the entire page.

If I try using control / alt /delete, it returns to normal after I x out of it.

But then the problem randomly returns later.

It has to be something simple I am overlooking.

Any suggestions?

Is it one 8 gb stick? It may not support them in that form and you might be better off with 2x4 gb instead. This is purely a guess. If you already have a 2x4GB setup then remove one and test each individually.

Did you calibrate the battery when you installed it? Full charge then full drain. Also make sure that HP Support is recognizing that you have a fully working battery. The warnings don't go away until you have it re-scan.

Assuming it is Windows 10 Under settings go to "system" "about" and check on the page that comes up that the RAM is recognised by the system

Check the ram - using memtest freely downloadable

If ok - see if it happens without the battery attached

@Zeusdelight If I recall correctly, it said that I had 16GB installed, and 15.7 was available.

@DallasCowboysFan That's good. Now time to check it is working properly. Being recognised by the system is the first step.

Ram is sometimes paired and you need to check speed. The lowest rank needs to be the slowest and largest config first. Read manual.
Those kinds of intermittent glitches make me suspect RAM compatibility is the issue. If the the two RAM sticks have different timings, it will revert to the worst values, but even then difficulties can arise. Board manufacturers don't usually test mixed brands of RAM together; all testing and verification is done with matched pairs. That's why most RAM is sold in pairs or quads from the same manufacturing run.

I took it to Best Buy and they ran a diagnostics test and checked for malware.
They replaced the RAM I had removed and said it was not the problem.

Final Conclusion.....they said there was a problem with the touchpad and they think I may have tightened the screws down too much and bowed the housing and the touchpad.

After they checked it out and reassembled it.....properly......no more problems.

Thanks for all the comments.

@DallasCowboysFan Well I never haha but hey these things happen sometimes you fiddle around with a few too many things while you under the hood and then it's nearly impossible to figure out what's causing the conflict but the main thing is you did figure it out in the end and glad to hear it's all solved now x

I checked with Crucial .com to make sure the RAM was compatible and found a similar one on amazon, so I would not have to pay shipping and it would arrive quicker.

But there may be a subtle difference I overlooked.
I'll remove it tonight and check it out.
It's frustrating. I have upgraded RAM before but never had this problem.
BTW, I already had 8 GB RAM, and this was a second stick for a total of 16 GB.

Ok so you changed the RAM and the battery. So you could take the new battery out run it on the mains for a while and see if that does anything but really like everyone else I suspect it's probably the RAM that's at fault. Like if that RAM slot has never been used before it might even just have a bit of dust build up in it.

this sounds like an OS/software problem to more more than anything doe via hardware. you could pull your added ram back out and see if the problem persists, but I suspect your only fix is going to be an OS upgrade or reinstall. are you keeping up to date on your OS and firmware/driver updates?

What do you mean by, "and added 8GB of RAM while it was open"

Check your RAM.

@ABCDEF7 It was unplugged, but I think I added the RAM after I replaced the battery.
The battery had not been charged but maybe there was still a conflict.

I'll pull everything out and start over again tonight.

@DallasCowboysFan RAM has to added/changed without power and without battery. Maybe that damaged something.

@ElwoodBlues

I unplugged the laptop from the AC.

Okay, I allowed the battery to drain to zero.
I removed the RAM and then the new battery.

Then I reinserted the RAM and then the battery.

Ran a bunch of diagnostic tests and updated the Bios.

Same problem.

Is it the right RAM for the laptop?. Does it match what is there already?. There are several configs that work, usually.

Might be overheating and freezing up your video card. Have the geek squad look at it.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@TexChik We concluded that the reason it was messing up is because when I was replacing the battery, a couple of plastic mounts fell out of the screw holders. When I tightened it down, the plastic housing bowed, and it impacted the touchpad. All they did was loosen the screws.......lol

Live and learn.......

@DallasCowboysFan Good. I usually run a minimum of 32 gigs of Ram in my laptops, with a 2 TB SSD and an i7 processor.
gregloa · 61-69, M
Get a new laptop
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@gregloa If I do, the next one will be a Mac Air or a Mac Pro.
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@gregloa That crossed my mind more than once.
Usually, Apple brings out their new laptops in the Spring but they have not announced the date of the event yet.
I'll buy a MacAir for a bit less or get the new one
The M2 processor they have now is far superior to the Intel I5 chip I have now.
I have heard that the M2 outperforms all the I7's.
Maybe they will release an M3.
I have an iPhone and Airpods.....it's time to complete the ecosystem.

Sounds like faulty RAM stick
DallasCowboysFan · 61-69, M
@SW-User I removed the new RAM just now and it is still doing the same stuff.
It might be time to take it to Best Buy.
