Problem with laptop after adding a new battery and RAM

I have a 15 inch HP laptop.
It's about 2.5 years old and the battery began to die on me.
So, I bought a new one from amazon and added 8GB of RAM while it was open.

The battery lasts several hours when it is unplugged, and it processes much faster. Great!

But, sometimes the screen locks up. I can't move the cursor.
I have tried hitting function/insert and that works, but then a blue highlight expands over the page. If I move the page up and down it highlights the entire page.

If I try using control / alt /delete, it returns to normal after I x out of it.

But then the problem randomly returns later.

It has to be something simple I am overlooking.

Any suggestions?

Is it one 8 gb stick? It may not support them in that form and you might be better off with 2x4 gb instead. This is purely a guess. If you already have a 2x4GB setup then remove one and test each individually.

Did you calibrate the battery when you installed it? Full charge then full drain. Also make sure that HP Support is recognizing that you have a fully working battery. The warnings don't go away until you have it re-scan.
