Problem with laptop after adding a new battery and RAM

I have a 15 inch HP laptop.
It's about 2.5 years old and the battery began to die on me.
So, I bought a new one from amazon and added 8GB of RAM while it was open.

The battery lasts several hours when it is unplugged, and it processes much faster. Great!

But, sometimes the screen locks up. I can't move the cursor.
I have tried hitting function/insert and that works, but then a blue highlight expands over the page. If I move the page up and down it highlights the entire page.

If I try using control / alt /delete, it returns to normal after I x out of it.

But then the problem randomly returns later.

It has to be something simple I am overlooking.

Any suggestions?

Check your RAM.

@ABCDEF7 It was unplugged, but I think I added the RAM after I replaced the battery.
The battery had not been charged but maybe there was still a conflict.

I'll pull everything out and start over again tonight.

@DallasCowboysFan RAM has to added/changed without power and without battery. Maybe that damaged something.
