Problem with laptop after adding a new battery and RAM

I have a 15 inch HP laptop.
It's about 2.5 years old and the battery began to die on me.
So, I bought a new one from amazon and added 8GB of RAM while it was open.

The battery lasts several hours when it is unplugged, and it processes much faster. Great!

But, sometimes the screen locks up. I can't move the cursor.
I have tried hitting function/insert and that works, but then a blue highlight expands over the page. If I move the page up and down it highlights the entire page.

If I try using control / alt /delete, it returns to normal after I x out of it.

But then the problem randomly returns later.

It has to be something simple I am overlooking.

Any suggestions?

Assuming it is Windows 10 Under settings go to "system" "about" and check on the page that comes up that the RAM is recognised by the system

Check the ram - using memtest freely downloadable

If ok - see if it happens without the battery attached

@Zeusdelight If I recall correctly, it said that I had 16GB installed, and 15.7 was available.

@DallasCowboysFan That's good. Now time to check it is working properly. Being recognised by the system is the first step.
