Need advice on my kitty again

She is such a drama queen. If I even walk in the direction of her food bowl or the kitchen, she is all over me meowing and circling my feet wanting food. I feed her regularly and as recommended for her weight.

Is this a cat thing? Constantly begging for food?
Carla · 61-69, F
Has she been dewormed?
Does she have fresh water?

I have a cat that demands her water be served in a glass bowl. She is 24.

Cats need fresh water, daily. It doesn't hurt to provide both kibble and wet food.

And, remember...she is always training you🙂
Carla · 61-69, F
@Northwest when tosh was younger, she enjoyed a dripping faucet
Carla · 61-69, F
@Kstrong oh yes. She hobbles around pretty gingerly. She can still jump into then onto the back of her favorite chair. She enjoys the vacuum cleaner. I believe it is the only thing she can hear.
Carla · 61-69, F
@bijouxbroussard well, she found she preferred her drink iced. Is that so much to ask?🙃
Pashmak has never been without food …

She mostly ignores her food but she wants her food bowl be full and that makes her feel loved and taken care of … security …
Ontheroad · M
@Soossie Yes, I didn't think of that, and now that you and @OogieBoogie have suggested substituting her need for love and security by seeking out food, her behavior makes perfect sense.
Yes!
My kitty wants food constantly 😀
He gets four small cans a day!
I had to nearly eliminate the dry food because it was giving him diarrhea and making him fat!!
He was over 24 pounds at one point!
Now he’s down to a more healthy 17 pounds.
He gets a little bit of dry food as a treat a few times a week.
Ontheroad · M
@Onestarlitnight DQ, because I started giving into her drama, started getting chunky, so I immediately went back to feeding her as recommended. Cats!
Of course because it is very natural for a cat in its nature to always be food insecure even though it's probably never missed a meal. They don't get hungry just because their stomach is empty. They get hungry when their stomach is no longer full to the top.
MoonlightLullaby · 41-45, F
My 19 year old still does it. Gotta love cats💖🤭
MoonlightLullaby · 41-45, F
@Ontheroad I understand well. They never seem to learn from it though. I worked in animal medicine and this is a common trait for them, even in shelter cats.
Ontheroad · M
@MoonlightLullaby Thank you. She was a shelter adoption and was found starving so that probably adds to her drama.

Never had a cat, so this is all a new experience for me.
MoonlightLullaby · 41-45, F
@Ontheroad Yes, that's probably the biggest culprit. Breaks my heart. 😞 Thank you for being a good human by adopting.🩷

@Ontheroad this sounds an all familiar story with my cat jess we got told she was overweight so we have cut her down too half a pouch of kitty food three set meal times . jess is always looking for her food early than her set times bt she is a bugger at our mealtimes coming parking herself next too youwwhilst you eat . you just have too be firm and fair you not like doing it but do not l.et the green eyes melt your heart
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
A pet thing!!
Ontheroad · M
@Quimliqer I had many dogs and yes, they do beg, but when you say no or shoo them away, that's it. DQ goes on and on no matter what I do.
Ontheroad · M
thanks all, I think what @OogieBoogie and @Soossie suggested is spot-on, the question is answered.

Not surprising that those two would see that... I'm a guy, we are so slow!
@Ontheroad hey...dont cut urself short 😂

I'm drawing on years of dog behavior study and training ....and even autism and human behavioral therapy .
i got taught from a professional how to assess adversive behavior and look for opportunities to use to adapt/retrain cognitive responses .
You've done an amazing job.

Your PURE CONSTANT patience has been the whole reason she has come this far.

It only takes one fuck up, one tiny break in that, one tiny push too far -.and all your work would have been trashed.
That's more than I can even express.

It's all about TRUST ....patience, gentle coersion, and gentle, passive, postive reinforcement .

You are building trust in an being that has had it destroyed and been hurt by it .

It can take years .
You've come so far so quickly 🤗
She might associate "feeding time" with love, which is understandable. It may be more about wanting to feel loved than hunger.
Ontheroad · M
@MsSwan Yep, @OogieBoogie and @Soossie mentioned this and I think you and they have the answer. thanks!
It's probably like the Pavlov's Dogs Experiment, when animals get used to a good thing happening after X event, then they get super excited when they think X event is happening.

Just random guessing here, but maybe try putting her food in an area that you walk towards the absolute least.

Or try some sort of new routine, like you won't touch her food nor start preparing it until after a certain noise (that only you can make and doesn't happen naturally)...

Or just change up the routine some how.

This is just my assumption but cats are carnivores and carbs are NOT essential to a cat's diet but a lot of store bought brands contain more carbs than protein which cat's can't digest. Your cat may be constantly hungry because the carb content is way too much for them. They are predators first and fore most. Switching a cat's diet does take time to avoid stomach upset but this is just a theory for me. It's just because a lot of brands contain fillers that may be bad for kitties.

No I've never heard of a cat behaving that way before
Ontheroad · M
@PepsiColaP So, I'm right to have changed her name to DQ (Drama Queen)... thanks!
@Ontheroad yes,she's being absurd
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
She just wants nummies dad!
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
@Ontheroad If it works 😂

She might need more food? Does she gobble it all up instantly at meals?
Ontheroad · M
@AlchemyFox Yep, but when I tried feeding her more, she almost instantly started to... what do women call it? Get fluffy😁
AlchemyFox · 36-40, F
@Ontheroad 🤣🤣🤣 Yeah she just wants to be a fluffy girl. She's working you 😂
I used to always just fill the bowl up and let her choose her own meal time

Pet the kitty…

The kitty wants love.

The kitty is needy…
Maybe it's similar to humans - you know, food taking place of love and affection ?

Not saying you don't give her any, just saying that she has a lot to make up for from her kittenhood and awful life before, and food is a 'feel good' thing 🤷

Can you pet her yet !
Is she up for touch ?
@Ontheroad she eats out of your hand ?!? 👀

Oh dude ..... THAT'S EXCELLENT
Oh I'm so amazed how good you are at this .

I think she was meant for you .....or you for her .🤗

And to be honest ....one of my cats meows at me as soon as I get up, (or get home ....or for no reason what'so ever) ....and follows me everywhere, (even the toilet)....for attention and to be patted .
And not just one pat ....he needs quite a few to feel satiated.
So I put a little stool he can sit on next to my kitchen bench so I can stand there all bleary eyed and half awake while making coffee .....and pat him 🤗

He also does it when I'm cooking 🤷

If I don't .....he gets VERY vocal ....and VERY pushy about it.

I originally thought he was hungry ....or wanted to be picked up and cuddled .
But he just got fat and then didn't eat his breakfast .....and wriggled when I cuddled him .

It turned out he just wants to be scritched and patted and talked to and looked at ....(he has a thing about eye contact) -. Go figure 🤷

Someone moved the stool the other day and he was VERY put out about it and mewed till I put it back 😏

And it took me a week or two to work that one out . He wanted attention ....but a very specific type of attention - not too little....not too much 😂
Ontheroad · M
@OogieBoogie Hey, can I be your cat? 😁 I promise to be good... that stool thing is the sweetest thing I think I've ever heard!
@Ontheroad It's incredibly cute .
He sits there while I talk to him about what I'm cooking ...or how my day went. And he sits there like he understands 😂

He's such a lovely boy .
He's not big on cuddles ...but he loves just to close, and touching 🤗

I leave my bathtub faucet at a slow drip.
Convivial · 26-30, F
Yep... They were masters of manipulation lol
Lilymoon · F
Cats are the biggest con artists 😹
Kstrong · 56-60, F
Hope you find the reason why
Allelse · 36-40, M
Yep. Just one of those things you have to accept, like them waking you up at night for a cuddle or scratching the couch. But it's not wrong to treat her once in a while.
Awww cute, yes kitties need quite a lot of protein … it helps to give them a strong immune system and good eyesight 🥹😌
Blondily · F
I would leave some kibble in a saucer for my cat to snack on during the day.
Cats have a fit if their food bowl is less that 98.37% full.
Not all cats. She’s healthy otherwise ?
Ontheroad · M
@bijouxbroussard Healthy and well fed.
@Ontheroad I ask because when my friends discovered one of their cats was diabetic, he had begun eating everything in sight: his food, the other cat’s food, the dogs’ food, and would beg for table scraps. They give him insulin shots now and while he doesn’t love that, he’s gotten used to it and his diet is being managed. .
Ontheroad · M
@bijouxbroussard She had a full set of labs done about a month ago, but if this continues, I'll take her in to recheck. Thanks.
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
Try to put the food bowl away after it ate
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
My one cat is like that. She only gets what is recommended with the occasional treat or she would be massive.
Lilnonames · F
Yes if I open the cat food cabinet ashes does the same or even wants what I'm eating

Quimliqer · 70-79, M
@Lilnonames Our dogs hover around the table waiting for a morsel to fall on the floor!!
Ontheroad · M
@Lilnonames If you don't give her food, does she keep on begging?
Lilnonames · F
@Ontheroad yup bout trip me lol so I put more in her bowl, the always leaves some
Cats are pick eaters, nibbling throughout the day, I recommend one of these.

@NativePortlander1970 I like the water idea - I will get her one, but she prefers wet food... will leave dry food and walk away.
