What’s the most hurtful thing anyone’s said to you?

Top | New | Old
A "good Christian" woman once informed me after the loss of my husband and son that it was "God’s punishment" for my having been an ally to gays and lesbians. I was so hurt that I was speechless, but my mother overheard and she was not.
She verbally tore the woman apart. It brought us much closer. 🥹

@bijouxbroussard I am so sorry this happened to you and for your loss.

@Lillybee17 That was an absolutely horrendous thing to say to you, especially at that age.
That I'm nice for recognition. It cut deep cos I'm just a naturally upbeat person and genuinely care about others. I never spoke to her again.

Well, there was this woman I kind of thought I liked. Part of a group of people from work. Our whole group played ball in the summer, went on ski trips in the winter, and generally hung out. One Friday a bunch of us went for drinks after work and she was complaining loudly that, since her breakup a few months back, she had absolutely NOTHING to do for the weekend. Later on in the evening we found ourselves sitting together, a bit apart from the group. We shared a few laughs, I paid for her drink and asked her if she would like to go for supper on Saturday.

She looked at me with a look that I could only think of as an entomologist examining some new and fairly repulsive species of bug as she said "No. Tens don't date threes." In truth, it was probably more honest than hurtful, but still...
@FrozenWasteland You dodged a bullet there. And she deserved to be alone. 🤨

That I would turn out like my father.

I made that statement my life goal to make sure I would never ever be that evil or that evil to children, women or to anyone that can't defend for themselves.

Then to say I would turn out to be just like him. That statement almost started a fist fight.
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
"Well, we all go through things."

My hip had been broken for five months at that point and having it dismissed like that completely ruined the friendship.
My mother said to a blotched-face, too-shy teen (me) while looking at a photo of me as a child: "You used to be so cute... what happened?"

@lissah good for you

“God has a plan” after my dad died.
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@Promises Agreed
@PerfectionOfTheHeart I have always hated that phrase.
@Pinkstarburst It's not an appropriate thing to say at all. People have a hard time sitting in a someone elses discomfort so they speak to sooth themselves. I feel it's a hug, a gentle touch of the shoulder, a mouth that is closed and an ear that is open that is most helpful.
hunkalove · 70-79, M
A boss once told me I looked like a benign Charles Manson. I glared at her and said I didn't appreciate the "benign" part of that.
I deserved to miscarry is 2nd to my husband comparing me to his ex by the amount of children we each had with him.
PerfectionOfTheHeart · 46-50, F
@V00doo …wait, what? Whoever said that to you is a legit monster. What an awful thing to say.

FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
@Prettybratbi1tch even since it first started. you're not alone. I was once a victim
Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F
@FreestyleArt did it finally speak to you?
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
@Prettybratbi1tch yea....only sends me an advertisement
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
It wasn't said directly to me, but to my mother when I was out of the room. My grandmother told her that adopting me was the biggest mistake of her life.
kodiac · 22-25, M
One of my fosters told me i wa such.a loser it's no wonder my parents didn't want me ..i was 8 and it was before i knew i was in foster because my parents died .The same one told me 6 months later my parents were dead.
KingofBones1 · 46-50, M
So many of them that I will never amount to anything that no one cares if I die that I am out to nothing and that I am a waste of oxygen. Those were all said to me by people who have supposedly been placed on this planet to love and care for me and at one time believe it or not one of my own parents
LordBarbossa · 36-40, T
Too many to list, and I don't feel like going through everything mentally to narrow it down.
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
don't know, I forgot. I've been picked on ever since I don't even care anymore
My father : “my biggest regret was your mother not aborting you when we had the chance”

My husband: “ your scars make it hard for me to love you anymore.”

My sister hurt my feelings once i dont want to talk about it
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
When my spouse said "your word is sh*t" just to hurt me but then said much later didn't mean it. It has stuck with me for years.
I had sex with you last night to make sure I didn’t love you anymore
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Why would I want to focus on that and giving it as much as a single thought?

@ScreamingFox I hate that all those things happened to you.
ScreamingFox · 41-45, F
@onrealityofdreams thank you. It's in the past, but it left some scars
@ScreamingFox You're welcome.
Of course it's left scars. Being told all those things over time would naturally cause deep long-lasting scars, and I'm sorry you were put through such trauma.
