Your brain craves familiarity. If you've been treated poorly enough, it feels familiar and you are drawn to that.
Another reason is that people are multi-faceted beings. They probably have good qualities you miss, and you are willing to overlook the bad stuff because of it.

Much abuse creates dependency on the abuser, you mold your life and identity around them so that when they are gone there is this enormous absence and hollowness. People can and will move on but the moving on can be challenging.

@CountScrofula yep !!!

The reason you miss anyone… you think about good memories you had
Nanori · F
I miss all the opportunities I had to slap them but I didn't

That happens to so many people and I believe it's because they're so afraid to strike out on their own, they're afraid of uncertainty, so they stay with what they know. Sad but true. I've been there.

To be treated (even poorly) is still to have someone engage with us. A familiar pain is better than loneliness

When you get too comfortable with continuity and being uncomfortable.

One would think not. However, I can say that I developed amnesia about all the very bad times after I left the ex. The ONLY thing I could remember were the good times. So I contacted him and he came and got me, and the punishment started in the moving van on the drive back to our old house...and then it got worse and worse and worse.
I was lucky I made it out alive.

Low self esteem. Or the few good times meant something.

I think it's the chasing of the good memories and putting mental blinders on to the bad ones.
ThreeLittleBirds · F
Because it’s ok to believe in the best of others until the best of them exists no more
