I can’t take somebody seriously when they have bad grammar

SW-User
My grammar ain't bad. She just old and rinkly.
BlueVeins · 22-25
I will continue to use bad grammar.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
Go read the thread on the difference between intelligence and education. Proper grammar is purely a product of education, which is a product of first language and educational opportunity, which in turn is significantly shaped by socio-economic and geographic opportunity and cultural influences. Using grammar as a screening device eliminates a lot of worldly wisdom.
Really · 80-89, M
@dancingtongue I agree in most respects but formally correct grammar can be essential for clear communication and for avoiding ambiguity.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Really True, and for those whom it is their first language and a formal education, bad grammar speaks volumes in and of itself, even beyond the potential miscommunication. Just saying that writing off what someone has to contribute solely for bad grammar can lead a very narrow and limited understanding of the world.

You mean the words wot which they use?
meJess · F
lol, the correct phrase is to make grammatical errors. You cannot ‘have’ bad grammar since it is an intangible.

I hope you continue to take yourself seriously though 😊.
Really · 80-89, M
@meJess A correct phrase would be 'to make grammatical errors' (Iincluding the quotation marks)

Isn't this fun ?
meJess · F
@Really as long as you don’t take it seriously.

It depends on the situation with me. If the person claims to be educated, then I tend to be sensitive to bad grammar. If a person has not had the benefit of a good education, I tend to overlook bad grammar.
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
Yeah..I'm the same way. If they didn't take grade school serious enough and at least learn how to speak properly, it just says something about their character
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
My wife is a teacher she still tells me when I have said the incorrect word after almost 23 yrs!
Really · 80-89, M
@2ndtimeguy Haha, 2 slow learners married to each other ! (sorry :) )
Katie01 · F

popmol · 26-30, M

onewithshoes · 22-25, F
Standards are certainly slipping, even in what passes for 'journalism' now.😯
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Isn't that statement itself bad grammar?
Really · 80-89, M
@DunningKruger To which statement do you refer; and in what respect do you judge its grammar 'bad'?
(Trying my hardest here :) )
Pretzel · 61-69, M
Your knot saying watt eye thin your saying or eee?
Repete · 61-69, M
What’s grandma got to do with it? 🙃
Bleak · 36-40, F
Grammar Nazi😉😉
Really · 80-89, M
@Bleak Haha, You need at least a verb there if there's something you're trying to convey :)
fun4us2b · M
