Viking settlements in the UK

[image/video - please log in to see this content]

I have recently started to look more closely into the Vikings. Does anyone have viking ancestry or live in a place with a viking connection?

I would be very interested in hearing your stories and swapping notes.

I'm of Irish descent from East Irish coast. So probably some viking there. Dublin was originally founded as a viking trading settlement at the mouth of the Liffey river.

I live in Kent where much less so. Recently found out actually it was mostly Jutes from Denmark area that came here post Romans. Kent still followed more Jutish law than Angles or Norman law up into time medieval period so I have been told.

@emmasfriend I've been to the Yorvik Centre a couple of times. Its very good. I've seen various reenactments too as I've travelled around the country. I love anything to do with living history.

I live in the fens, on the edge of East Anglia. There are several monasteries in the area that were sacked by the vikings. Archeological evidence is scarce though. Apart from spending the winter in Thetford, not much else is known for sure.

Lewes,Rye and Hastings, near to me,we're definitely taken over by the Saxons, long history of them here and some remains/ buildings can still be seen

@HotPizza71 Interesting history in that part of the country. Ive been to an event at Battle Abbey.

I once drove past Lewes Castle. Simon de Montfort held Henry III there. He was rescued by his son, the future Edward I.

@Achelois I've just been reading about Jarrow Hall. It looks interesting. Might be worth having a look. I have been to Jarrow but we were doing a Catherine Cookson tour. I don't remember getting out of the coach to look around.
