It depends on your point of view regarding good and bad. The long and short of it is, confederates were fighting to leave the union And maintain slavery, the union fought to quell the separatist movement and remove slavery. The union won.

It's impossible to tell no documents survive from the time. Particularly documents that would explicitly lay out that the civil war was about slavery and the right of slaver states to keep owning people as property.
Rather the only surviving documents of the civil war are statues of confederate generals, who I'm pretty sure were all great guys.

That is an inaccurate statement. You need to read about American history.
It's impossible to tell no documents survive from the time. Particularly documents that would explicitly lay out that the civil war was about slavery and the right of slaver states to keep owning people as property.

If Lincoln had lived he would have deported all Back people in America. He was not against slavery; he just didn't want it to spread to the new western territories, which is why he came up with the homestead program.
Slavery continued in a couple of Northern States after the end of the Civil War and for years after that in California.
BTW, slavery is still legal in America but some States have outlawed it.
Initially, the Civil War was fought because the South believed they had a right to secede while the North said they did not. As the war progressed, President Lincoln started to support the idea to abolish slavery.

The real bad guys in the conflict was the main stream media of the time. Much like our current affairs, they had little interest in informing the public and a major stake in stoking fear and violence in order to enhance their bottom line. The good guys were the poor, ignorant, and innocent who dutifully followed their misguided loyalties into battle.

The way it's been explained to me is it really wasn't only about slavery.,lincoln wanted to maintain federal control while the confederacy wanted control to be in the hand of the state

You had the Union, the Northern States and the Confederates, the Southern States. The Union wanted to abolish slavery and the Confederates wanted to keep it. The North had the majority of the industry and the South had the farms and Plantations. The South needed the labor. That's why they favored Slavery. Since the Union won history flavors the winner so the Union is the good guys. Both my mom's and dad's side of the family fought for the Union.
