My foreign history is hazy. In the American civil war who was the goodies and who were the baddies?

The real bad guys in the conflict was the main stream media of the time. Much like our current affairs, they had little interest in informing the public and a major stake in stoking fear and violence in order to enhance their bottom line. The good guys were the poor, ignorant, and innocent who dutifully followed their misguided loyalties into battle.
