Good luck. I have tried in the past, and learned they need plenty of water like watermelons and both need well-draining beddings areas, or the pumpkin/watermelon itself rots before ripening.

@WillaKissing i try something different each year, as I have space. The soul surrounding the root areas is dry clay, so that should work
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@meggie As the pumpkins blossom and then grow make sure they are not in sitting water.
OverTheHill · 61-69, M
We've tried at our home garden, but haven't had the best success with getting a larger pumpkin. They end up much smaller.
meggie · F
@OverTheHill well if we get a hot summer I think they'll do ok, but you never can tell in the UK.
Tumbleweed · F
Yes, I've grown them before. Make sure they have plenty of room because the vines get huge

@meggie I was offering an impractical solution to a practical problem just for giggles. 😉

Did pumpkins about 5 years ago this is easy I thought about a third got destroyed by insects and rot but it was ok. They haven't worked since.

My parents grow orange squashes. So far they've been successful but it's always a fight with slugs.

@CrazyMusicLover well I've sprinkled slug pellets around

@CrazyMusicLover slugs don't like sand and wont get in it.

They are impressive. My father did. Not sure he did much more than prepae the soil, sow the seeds, thin down and "let if grow".
SomeMichGuy · M
No.
They appear in markets, magically, without ANYone EVER having grown them. EVER.
They aren't hard to grow, nor the other squashes, incl. zucchini.
You might ask a local farming/agricultural expert about what might have gone wrong.

I haven't but i love pumpkins
HumanEarth · F
I do I just use a chisel plow and throw seeds out in handfuls. Then go though with a water tanksprayer and I just leave it alone.

tobynshorty · 51-55, F
I wanted to try but I don’t know. Never done it before.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Only once by dumb luck -- we must have thrown out a pumpkin in the yard and once, years ago, we realized we had a pumpkin vine growing along the lawn and up into the evergreen trees. The pumpkins were actually full grown an d hanging from the trees by Halloween-time, but then someone smashed them all in the middle of the night. :(
