Has anyone grown pumpkins before

I've tried butternut squash and had no luck, so giving pumpkins a try this year. They should look like these if they do mature.

My parents grow orange squashes. So far they've been successful but it's always a fight with slugs.

@CrazyMusicLover slugs don't like sand and wont get in it.
Sprinkle sand around the plant.
