CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
1) Mulholland Drive - the atmosphere, sound design, story and what the overall mind-fuck it is, I love the big revelation and that dinner scene that is a complete nightmare for everyone with social anxiety
2) Love Exposure - I love the ideas in it, it's so provocative and hilarious, it made me laugh so hard the first time I've seen it
3) MirrorMask - soundtrack, mis-en-scene, how it's more like an artwork than a movie thanks to its visual style

EBSVC · 41-45, T

TexChik · F
The Cowboys

Top gun(s)

Heat ( in spite of the disgusting DeNiro) its the best cop and robber movie ever made. Great cast and writing.
tenente · 36-40, M
@TexChik
Heat

best shoot out scene hollywood ever produced
TexChik · F
@tenente i agree! I saw it at the theater first and they had the sound up, Val Kilmer did such a good job changing mags that the military uses the video in training that.
There are too many so I’ll recommend two of my favorites I recently saw for the first time.

"Wages Of Sin" A mid 1950's French film about four way down on their luck men, desperate to leave a poverish life.

"Sorcerer" is a remake of the above set in a different country. One of the best movies of the 70's
The Godfather 2, The Firm. Top Gun, Maybe My Cousin Vinny

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

A Christmas Carol - the Alastair Sim one

only 3? i'll say: hunt for red october, the martian, and oceans 11
RottingPixel · 26-30, F
Martyrs (2008) - A cornerstone of New French Extremity. It starts as a brutal revenge thriller and turns into a bleak, philosophical exploration of suffering. A secret society tortures people to the absolute limit to see if they can reach a state of "martyrdom" and glimpse the afterlife. It is relentlessly heavy.

American Psycho (2000) - A pitch-black satire of 1980s Wall Street yuppie culture and toxic masculinity.

Cannibal Holocaust (1980) - The grandfather of the found-footage genre. It's infamous because it looked so real the director actually had to go to court and prove his actors were still alive.
tenente · 36-40, M
@RottingPixel another vote for Martyrs. Wow that film is troubling but getting many mentions...
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
The most important thing in rating a movie to me is the acting. Second is story telling. The least important is a message. I can usually get a message in a paragraph or two.

1. The Godfather..great acting across the entire cast.

2. Inglorious Bastards..Christopher Waltz delivered one of the most underrated performances of all time.

4. The Ten Commandments..'56 version. There is not a religious bone in my body. But I'm always intrigued by the over the top acting style. The director displayed real genius making this movie.

Tomorrow I may have a different three at the top.
@MoveAlong

Would you agree casting is important?

From https://www.numberanalytics.com/blog/mastering-film-casting

Casting is a crucial aspect of film production that can make or break a movie's success. The right actors can elevate the story and characters, bringing depth and nuance to the narrative. In this article, we will explore the importance of casting, the casting process, and how to work effectively with casting directors and actors.

@rinkydinkydoink

Would you agree casting is important?

Absolutely. All of the Paramount executives wanted to reject Al Pacino as Michael in The Godfather. Francis Ford Coppola thought he was right for the part and fought furiously to keep him. I can't imagine anyone could have played the part better.

I guess a lot of luck might figure in casting. Some role casting should have been obvious though. Think Kevin Costner in Robin Hood. A terrible fit that should have been obvious. Or LOL, John Wayne as Genghis Kahn.

Nice...

Mine'll have...let's see..

1 - 'The Empire Strikes Back' - The BEST 'Star Wars' movie, period. Great story arc, wonderful locations as well. Well made.

2 - 'Witness' - The Harrison Ford/Kelly McGillis movie, based in the Amish community. Wonderfully shot. Just a brilliant drama/action movie.

3 - 'La Femme Nikita' - Wonderful French language movie...not the TV thingy....of a convicted criminal given a new life and training as a professional hit-person.

SJD x
Hoodski · 36-40, M

SammyJo · 51-55, F
@Hoodski I believe it won an Oscar/Grammy for 'Best Cinematography' the year it was out. Just beautiful. Great storyline too...
