Martyrs (2008) - A cornerstone of New French Extremity. It starts as a brutal revenge thriller and turns into a bleak, philosophical exploration of suffering. A secret society tortures people to the absolute limit to see if they can reach a state of "martyrdom" and glimpse the afterlife. It is relentlessly heavy.

American Psycho (2000) - A pitch-black satire of 1980s Wall Street yuppie culture and toxic masculinity.

Cannibal Holocaust (1980) - The grandfather of the found-footage genre. It's infamous because it looked so real the director actually had to go to court and prove his actors were still alive.
