Are daytime soaps a thing of the past?

Is this the end of the soap opera genre?

In these Days of Our Lives, daytime dramas just don’t grip broadcast TV executives like they used to. Last week, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming announced that the long-running soap opera Days of Our Lives would be moving to Peacock after nearly 67 years on NBC.

Did you know Days Of Our Lives started out as a radio drama before there was TV in most homes? That's a long ass time

I think they'll retain a small audience.
For some reason I keep dreaming that I'm watching Home And Away. 😂

@Matt85 what?

Days of Our Lives has been on Peacock since 2022. I think the soap operas that you are referring to that began as radio dramas were The Guiding Light and As the World Turns. Both began as radio programs back in the 1930s. Soap Operas are like the water buffalo of TV. They used to roam the daytime tv of America. While ABC still has General Hospital and NBC/Peacock has Days of our Lives, CBS still runs Young and the Restless, Bold and the Beautiful and the new soap opera Beyond the Gates.

I sure hope so.

I think General Hospital and the Young and the Restless are still on.

My mom watched Days and GH

My grandmother used to watch them.
I think they've been bested by multi episode options on Netflix, Prime, etc. which can be watched on demand, and play to a conclusion.

They’re still around, just from a different country and in a different language (most of the time, anyway), if you know what I mean. Daytime soaps are out and telenovelas are in.
HumanEarth · F
I think I understand, maybe.

@HumanEarth Spanish-language soap operas, usually of Latin American origin. They’ve grown quite popular in the US in the past decade or so. To the point where it seems they’ve outright replaced American daytime soaps.
HumanEarth · F
Oh, I fully understand now
WoWgirll · 36-40, F
I didn't know it started like that. AI could replace them so I'd say time is limited for the soap operas
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
Yes, they should be replaced with educational documentaries. I'm sure that will increase the ratings. 🧐

There is still a few on tv

We need soap operas, hopefully some people will get the hint about hygiene.
