What was the biggest moment on tv in your opinion?

Who shot Jr?[media=https://youtu.be/9YPQARBgHS8] (that's mine)
SW-User
September 11. The ex and I seldom watched news, but on that day, we watched all evening in horror. It was unforgettable.
@SW-User For sure. I was about to leave for work when the second plane hit. I ran back in to watch. When I did go to work, it was surreal. We put it on the TV there and watched the towers fall. Everyone had these stunned blank looks on their faces. I'll never forget that.

@BrewCityBarfly I was signing off the internet that morning, when the headline "plane hits NY city tower" caught my eye. I didn't stop to read more, assuming it was a small commuter plane with engine trouble or maybe a copycat crime.. because a couple of weeks before 9/11, in my town, a man flew a small plane into his own house to kill his wife and kid. Fortunately, the wife & kid had gone out...

Anyway, a few minutes later, my ex called from work and asked if I'd heard. By then, the 2nd plane had hit and he told me the whole story. I think we were in shock for months.
@SW-User My husband called me right after it happened and i left Cnn on all day long. terrible day

I was wondering this the other day.

Well I suppose the obvious answer would be the moon landing in 69.
Other than coverage of the Queen's marriage to Prince Philip in 53 that would have been seen as massive despite a good slice of the people of GB not having a television at that time.
HOLD UP !!!
If you're from GB and old enough to remember 1980/81
The S.A.S storming of the Iranian Embassy to end the siege ???
That ballsy jump by that soldier from one balcony to another as that explosion blew the window out ???

Rutterman · 46-50, M
Three-way tie between Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald, the first moon landing, and 9/11.
@Rutterman i wouldn't mind watching another moon landing...the way they used to show it. everyone in the world stops moving to watch
Axeroberts · 56-60, M
@Rutterman i would agree with the moon landing
GeniUs · 56-60, M
Bradford fire disaster
Warning -don't watch if you feel sad already.
On Youtube search 'Bradford city fire' won't link to it from here as it's 'distressing'
Fire starts about 1:30, man walks out of the fire at 5:40.
Police and fans working together to save people.

Lee Harvey Oswald being shot in the police station
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
@Pretzel was that live on TV? I have seen it but Im not old enough to have seen it happen?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Pretzel Oh yeah I was in first grade and saw that. Good thing the tv was black and white.
@cherokeepatti i was watching a shooting occur through a policeman's' body cam. i am still creeped out. it was too much to be watching on youtube
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
There has been some shocking events at sports events broadcast on live TV.

Fighting at the Heysel Stadium.
Bradford Stadium fire.
England fans tearing up Landsdowne Road in the middle of the game.
The crush at Hillsborough.

These are the ones I can remember from an English football perspective. I'm sure other countries have had their own experiences.
@Jacko1971 OMG! i hadn't even thought about those. i tend to look away. Remember the Who concert? in Cincinnati? i was supposed to be there but my friend and i got into a fight and then she had a car accident so she didn't make it either

During my life:
1. JFK being shot in Dallas.
2. Live coverage of the war in Vietnam.
3. Live coverage of the bombing in Iraq.
4. The 911 attack.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@JSul3 THere arent too many of us who remember where we were when we heard JFK had been shot..😷
JSul3 · 70-79
@whowasthatmaskedman My wife saw him and Jackie as they left Fort Worth on their way to the Air Force base for the quick flight to Dallas.
Her entire school lined the highway and waved at them. She said she was so close, she could have reached out and shook his hand. By the time she and her school mates had walked back to the school and got settled in class, an announcement came over the intercom speakers, saying he and Gov. Connally had been shot.

I was sitting in class at school and they announced it.

My father and I watched Jack Ruby shoot Lee Harvey Oswald on live tv....and John Lewis and others beaten by state police, after crossing the Edmund Pettis Bridge.

I have see so many things.
@JSul3 very good points
Pretzel · 61-69, M
not sure it was the biggest but it was the most clever

Pretzel · 61-69, M
@DIABLISS yeah it was a good movie!
I love hitchcock - even his crap stuff
@Pretzel what is crap stuff?
Pretzel · 61-69, M
@DIABLISS if you go to youtube and search hitchcock you'll see stuff from the 20s and 30s - before he hit his stride - even that stuff (which the experts call bad, was better than a lot of the stuff that was put out at the same time)
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Not sure it counts as TV as I saw it online. But the vertical landing of the SpaceX boosters was quite something. After reading SF for nearly sixty years here at last was the beginning of space flight the way it was always meant to be!

Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
The shooting of JR was big thing at the time. Social media didn't exist at the time. Nowadays it is much harder to keep things completely secret.

Back in the 1980s. Dr Who killed off one of the Doctor's companions. That to my knowledge was the only time it ever happened in classic who.

In modern Who Peter Capaldi managed to kill off both of his.

The Doctor was played by Peter Davison and the companion was a young man named Adric played by Matthew Waterhouse. At the end of the episode, Adric sacrificed himself to save everyone else. The end credits rolled over a black screen with no backing music. That was was a very moving moment to witness.
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
Im not old enough to have seen the moon landing but I did see the first space shuttle launch. We watched it at school. I was around 10.

The announcement of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.
Harmony · 31-35
@Jacko1971 that wasn't such a surprise for me. I was expecting it would happen that year . I am not British so it didn't affect me at all
Jacko1971 · 51-55, M
@Harmony I didn't know she was that ill. I came home from work and on the TV was a big railing covered in flowers and people mooching about. I guessed what was going on. I knew it would happen sooner than later but its still a shock when it does.
Harmony · 31-35
@Jacko1971 i can understand
HannahSky · F
That was big. Can't think of another show bigger, except maybe M*A*S*H ending.
@HannahSky i missed it . i had to wait until they re-showed it in the summer

[media=https://youtu.be/dLv0CdxJPWs]
@Canuckle does Canada have a variety show like this anymore? except funny
Canuckle · 51-55, M
@DIABLISS closest I would say is the political satire with “This Hour has 22 minutes”

I think 9/11 for shock and moon landing for awe

The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, February 9, 1964.
GeniUs · 56-60, M
As well as the Bradford fire;
the moon landing, my mum got us out of bed to watch it as it happened it was about 5 in the morning or something.
9/11 was at work and everybody just gathered in the crew room to watch on TV.
Death of Lady Diana, my wife at the time came piling in from work to wake me up and tell me. Thanks.

Kind of a toss-up between the live broadcasts of the assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald and the second jet hitting the World Trade Center.

🤔. Probably first time I seen a broadcast . I spent a year watching test pattern while waiting 💁‍♂️

The Canary Wharf bombing was shocking.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
9/11 because
a) I was in NYC as it happened; and
b) I was involved with putting some of the tower footage on the air, as I worked for a network at that time. I believe I have some mild PTSD as a result; it certainly spiked my OCD.
@uncalled4 i am so sorry for you having to go through that and thank you for your efforts. did you write about it anywhere?
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@DIABLISS Yes. If you search my topics, there should be a few things. I usually write about it on 9/11 or thereabouts.
DDonde · 31-35, M
9/11, no doubt
