Finally saw the original Top Gun - UPDATE! Now I've seen the sequel, too

Somehow I had gone all this time without seeing Top Gun. Just watched it on cable. Tom Cruise is not my favorite person but it was pretty decent. Big takeaway, those fighter pilots were KIDS.
Hopefully I'll see the sequel soon. I read a review that said it was better than the original.

UPDATE: Saw the sequel today and I'm glad! Good job.

That movie convinced my son to join the Navy. A move he never regretted.

@SageWanderer I am glad it worked out well for him.

Never got around to seeing the original, but I heard it's pretty good. I'm not a big fan of Tom Cruise either.
I saw it for the first time about 2 weeks ago. Thought it was a bit homoerotic in places, but entertaining nonetheless.
The soundtrack was pretty dope for the time.

when you grow up with Top Gun, it doesn't matter what people think, good bad sucks.. etc.. it's like Rocky you know.. I'll watch the new one, but meh, it's just another movie for cruise production company to make money, it can't be a generation influencer, I don't imagine

Re KIDS.

There's a old pilot line that goes ....

There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.

Also in pilot language is the phrase ...

Bought the farm

which translates into "got killed".
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@Heartlander To elaborate: Got killed - the life insurance paid the family's farm mortgage!
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@JollyRoger just. A few days ago I watched a WW2 documentary with quite a bit of detail about the naval battles in the Pacific. At one stretch the life expectancy for US Navy aviators was 12 missions. There were comparable losses in Europe.

The thing that still strikes me about Top Gun almost 40 years later is that, by the time I reached the door of the theater, I had forgotten pretty much everything about it.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
I saw it for the first time about a month ago!

Gee, you really are a laggard, aren't you? 😂
Poppies · 61-69, F
@DrWatson I guess it takes one to know one!

And that is reality -- we turn these billion dollar pieces of machinery over to kids to fly. But then they have the required reflexes to do what needs to be done at those high speeds. There aren't many old fighter pilots, and the Chuck Yeagers of the test pilot world are far between as well. As I recall there was a cameo appearance by Chuck Yeager, or a fictionalized version of him, in the original Top Gun.
I enjoyed the original, as well.
But I don't really have an interest in watching the sequel because I don't much care for Tom Cruise, either.

Im pretty certain i saw the original. Apparently, it made little impression.
I really don't care for cruise and have no interest in adding to his bank account.

The only problem is that I think in most modern fights, they stand off at a distance and use missiles.
I just can’t after watching team america..

Phuk yeah 🕺

Tm Cruise is who he is. Nobody is perfect, and not everybody likes everybody.
But the movie's sequel is awesome. 🙂
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Zonuss I agree. Cruise the person is sub par. Cruise in the right part is a great actor. Ditto for Kevin Spacey. You wouldnt want him near your kids. But in the usual Suspects or House of Cards? Superb.😷

I've still never seen it 😆
I loved the original, but it fit right into the spirit of the 80s. I do plan to see the new movie, but I haven’t decided if I’m waiting until it’s streamed.
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
I still have yet to see it
FeetAreFantastic · 41-45, M
I liked the original back in the day. Not sure if I'd still like it now.
I have no interest in seeing the sequel.
