Worrying about suicidal people online - ways to stop fearing the worst?

I have a thing when people online (real, or fake) say they are feeling suicidal or have attempted. What tips are there for us when someone online says this, to get closure or know if they are okay? Basically I want to know ways to find out an online stranger hasn’t died? Any tips or ideas?

It's cool you care. Try not to change. I can tell you data wise, most people I've tried to help have continued on. It's a very high percentage. Know this but don't use it to dismiss people. It can only be that high because of people who do care. We have to make moves. Inaction wouldn't have the same outcome.

@Magicianzini thank you. I hope it was a lie.

It happened on MySpace in 2009. I believe the person was lying as they were using photos of other people and I was messaged by multiple accounts in a pile-on attack. All the accounts had fake images of site-models.

In light of this, do you think I was lied to and no one attempted, or died? The fear has always stuck in my head that it was real - even if the people saying it had fake identities 😢

You can't, and I'd say the best defense for you is to keep your boundaries. It's admirable to care but as someone who has supported a lot of suicidal people in my personal life, you have to protect yourself emotionally and know what your limit is.

Honestly i dont say anything most of the time because words matter and my worst fear is to say something and make it worse. All i can do is advise them to seek help. But i also want them to know that they are seen and being heard.

@AngelUnforgiven anything is possible? Do you think it’s more likely to be a lie?? Or true? 🤔 😔
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@BurningBright I honestly can't say because I don't know the person I wish that I could be of more help.

@AngelUnforgiven I kinda feel like if someone has a fake identity, it’s unlikely they were telling the truth about a suicide/ attempt. Idk though if that’s often the case, online especially?
There very rarely are any ways to know for sure. That’s why I find it important to take every post of that nature seriously. There’s never any concrete way of knowing what’s going on in the minds and hearts of those behind the computer screen.

Yes, the way is to accept their autonomy and your lack of control.

Whatever you give from a good heart to a stranger, give without expectation and attachement.

That's what I try to do after all these years dealing with death.

This place holds no empathy tbf mate. For most of my life ive had suicidal ideations. Burned between my b.m and privates to relieve the pain in my mind. Burned tattoos out. Busted my hands countless times. Alsorts of horrible sh t. Been under psychiatrists. Had humpteen different anti psychotic meds. Ive finished a DBT course a while back. Im not like that as bad now. Suicide ideations still play a part but im too much of a coward and now i actually want to live. I hope you can help someone here or in life. You are clearly a kind natured person.

@Perry1968 it was 2009 on MySpace and the person saying it (and blaming me) was a fake account. I never got concrete details
Perry1968 · M
@BurningBright Ah right. I guess after all of this time you.ll never know.
BurningBright · 31-35, M
@Perry1968 it’s hard to do. If a fake account told you a suicide/attempt happened, and then you found out it was a fake account… would you think they were lying about it?? 😔

No can do😟
BurningBright · 31-35, M
@Wiseacre I kinda get why. It just also seems hard to feel certain…
Wiseacre · F
@BurningBright nothing is 100%certain..u’v no responsibility here, so let it go.
BurningBright · 31-35, M
@Wiseacre trying to accept I was lied to and no one died cause of me 😔 it’s hard - lived with it so long… I’m tired of the agonising tbh
Go to work for Homeland security or CIA or something of the sort. That way you can keep all the tabs you want.

@MayorOfCrushtown You make it sound like they would let you work for them just by asking.

I have been making threads about my spy like skills in social media since 2008 and even had couple of them roam around me. Still no job offers whatsoever.

Very disappointed. Now I am offering my services to China.
