&*#%^&*$ Received a phone call from my Medical Centre.

About 10 days ago I had a C.A.T. scan on my lungs.
The government offered free Lung Cancer screening for people who previously smoked.
I smoked a packet of cigarettes a day for 30 years.
Stopped at least a decade ago.
We agreed that I will not need to worry about it unless there was an issue in which case I would be contacted.
That contact has now occurred, and I have an appointment for Thursday morning.

So glad you did get that CAT scan. Lots of hugggs Gus💜🫂I'm sorry there's been some worrisome results, But, now they can work to really treat, minimize and hopefully stop those diseases from progressing. What is the treatment for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?
Gusman · 61-69, M
@Baybreeze Because I am having no real trouble breathing, though I do tire rather quickly with any sort of manual labour, the treatment is usually bronchodilators.
The upcoming CT Coronary Angiogram will determine the course of treatment.
13th January is that date.

Next step in my health care is for a CT Coronary Angiogram.
Appointment on the 13th of January.
The booking was difficult to understand. The lady on the phone had a thick accent which I had real trouble understanding.
I had to ask her to repeat herself a few times though we got there in the end.

@Gusman Yes. Australians come with many accents...😷

Out of curiosity I roughly added the amount of cigarettes I have smoked over 30+ years.
I know when I started, I was buying packets of 20 cigarettes. Those packets changed to 25 cigarettes.
So, let's average it out to 22 cigarettes a day for 30 years. Might have been 35 years.
For simplicity I will keep it at 30 years.
22 ciggies a day, 365 days a year for 30 years comes to a total of 240,000 cigarettes.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Gusman Now calculate the extra tax you paid on close to a quarter of a million cigarettes in that time..😷
Gusman · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Beyond the realms of my capabilities. Being almost mathematically illiterate. 🙂
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Gusman Let me help you with my magic. It will average to 40% of what you paid for the cigarettes over the thirty years. With variables being the year you started and the year you quit. The govt take on cigarettes as a % rose through that time frame. But that will be near enough for Jazz..😷

For a Coronary Angiogram my heart needs to be slowed down to about 62 beats per minute.
I have been given pills and I will be monitored for 30 minutes to check for any negative symptoms.

My heartbeat is down to 61.
One person before me then my turn. I might be out of here within the hour
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
Heres hoping its something minor and fixable. And take some comfort in knowing you are someplace that will get you world class care at no cost and they will do whatever it takes.. Good luck with it. And keep me in the loop please..😷
Gusman · 61-69, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Cancer treatment is not free.
Only the screening test is free.
For public patients (myself) 85% is covered, not including many extras.
I will keep you in the loop.

Today is 13th January, the day of my CT Coronary Angiogram.
Sitting in the waiting room now.
Told to allow 4 hours for the appointment to be over and done with.

As a follow-up to my lung scan the doctor recommended a CT Coronary Angiogram.
Sitting in the waiting room. Been told to allow 4 hours for total appointment time.

LadyBronte · 61-69, F
@Gusman Sound like you got in too see the doc in the nick of time! I hope they have a good treatment plan for you to begin!
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@Gusman The positive news is that there are no signs of lung cancer. Both my partners were heavy smokers for decades but had quit. My late wife never had COPD but unfortunately did have lung cancer, essentially untreatable due to location by the time it manifested itself. My subsequent partner had COPD for over a decade which was treatable, including oxygen the last few years, but fortunately not the cancer.

Hopefully all of yours have been caught early enough to be largely treatable.

And a further reminder to all: (1) you never fully recover from the damage smoking does to your lungs, no matter when or for how long you have quit. The only "cure" is to not start smoking. (2) If you were a heavy smoker, get screened early and regularly; do not wait for symptoms to physically show up because by then you may have already eliminated some treatment options.

Best wishes for you, and be thankful that even though you may have significant co-pays you are fortunate to have a universal health care system that does the heavy lifting.

I hope everything goes well for you 🙏🏻
Gusman · 61-69, M
@Cigarguy Thank you. A wait and see situation. 🙂
