Can you appreciate someone else's art while having no appreciation for your own?

Yes, but the million dollar question is.... Why don't we have that appreciation for are own art?
I really do love seeing someone's talent and them being so proud and happy! Too cool!
.... sometimes we are our worst critics.

@ShadowWorker I see you have the idea of the point I was making. :)

Of course you can. The reason artists are unable to appreciate their own art is that they are, typically, perfectionists. They never want to stop working the piece. They can't let go.
Yes :) .... not in an absolute sense, but in degrees.

With someone else's art you are usually unaware of the artist's self doubts and compromises, or mistakes that were painted over, or maybe the need for $$ ... and the need to get it sold trumped their need to achieve perfection.

But you do know all that stuff about your own art :)

Sure. Take a look at Monet's water lilies or just about any Van Gogh or Caravaggio. It's easy to appreciate genius in art while knowing I'll never produce anything within lightyears of it.

Yes. I do it all the time.
But in my case, my art is actually not very worthwhile so it makes it easier.

I have said this before on SW. I am always in awe of someone who can do what I cannot. Dancing, sketching, sculpting, decorating, etc.

@RogueLoner Yep. I think some people do get a bit jealous, but maybe it's motivation to try harder.

@SW-User I'd rather just observe and marvel in the talent that I don't have and never will. Like dancing. I used to dance OK, but how some of these people look like they are floating on air when they dance is beyond me. It's amazing. I could watch good dance videos all day.
I remember when I was very young, like 8 or 9 years old , there was a guy on KDKA channel 2 who was an artist. He made charcoal sketches and I was just riveted to the TV at the ease at which he did it. I can draft blueprints and such, but to make a sketch like that...no way. I can't even draw a stickman.
SW-User
@RogueLoner I see what you mean. I too admire those things but also love it when I can attempt the same with better results after maybe seeing something done or getting tips from someone on how they did it.
Dancing.... it's just never happening to dance like the stars! lol
