Take a step back. When any potentially dangerous emotion enters my mind, I pause for a split second and consider it.

I like to put a little distance between me and it by thinking something like "I notice that I'm feeling angry".

That separation allows me to avoid being swept away by it and I can then decide if it is justifiable and a good use of emotion
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@SomeIrishPerson I need to learn to utilize that split second.

It's a good habit to have.

It isn't always easy at first but the more you try, the more it becomes a habit.

I will go for walks, but I do tend to isolate so I don't do something I'll regret later. Then it tends to turn into sadness for me
HowtoDestroyAngels · 46-50, M
@SlippingAway same here.
WontBback · 56-60, F
Mild anger, I wait 90 seconds before reacting, then I try to react calmly. Extreme anger, I withdraw from everything, so I don't say or do anything that I will regret later.
GerOttman · 70-79, M
Anger is a choice, I choose compassion.

I count to 10 or 20 or 30 or more and weigh my options. Usually by that time i come to my senses and calm myself down.
