One of my greatest fears is outliving my wife. I think this comes from the first 2mins of the film Up.

Society and public services aren’t kind to lonely old men. And by then my daughters will be busy having adventures of their own.

In fact this happened to me last year--my wife of 42 years passed away after a long illness. Life is different now! Sadly, unless you die together in an accident this is what happens as we get older. But it is never easy.

@Docdon23 I can’t imagine, but what I can chills me to the bone. Wishing you well.

@WintaTheAngle Thank you. I try to remember the good times and move forward. I am fortunate that I have kids and grand kids to love.

@Docdon23 my condolences

Nobody cares about you when you're truly lonely.

Your daughters won't turn their backs. They will only begin to understand the gravity of your love for them on their adventures.

And if nothing else, you will have loved and been loved. Many of us will never have that.

@AlchemyFox You’re certainly right there.

You are at least lucky that you have a daughter. We couldn't have children. Both my wife and I are only children. Our parents are gone. She is six years older than me and handicapped. The odds of her outliving me are not good.

@Musicman I’m very aware of how luck I have. It’s just a nagging thought that wont let go.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@WintaTheAngle When I go there will be no one. I will probably be at the mercy of some old age facility.

I sure your girls wont neglect their old Dad, but sure some people make your life so colourful that their absence would be sheer agony.

I feel for older men when they lose someone near to them

OMG dude, yes!

I had the same exact response to this film, its DEVASTATING when he loses his wife...I can't believe this is a cartoon
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@SumKindaMunster I think it’s the knowledge that I have things really good, I’m very lucky, and somehow one day that will have to end.

I didn’t expect Pixar to be able to so accurately put my worst fear across in the opening scenes of a children’s film. It catches you off guard.

@WintaTheAngle 🤔a true and very sad fact you point out it rather show the lack of empathy too the old and needy
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
I can understand your thoughts on this. I think about this myself.
I'm not facing death yet, but those around me in real life don't give enough of a shit to even come visit me anymore...
Uniquesara · 41-45, F
I say it is much more difficult for men
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Unless there's a large age gap, statistically women outlive men. So I dunno, maybe not worry so much? I know that seems harsh to say, but I can relate to being scared of loved ones dying before me.
