I don't interpret the quote with having anything to do with freedom of speech. In layman's terms, the quote means that the ability to analyze before accepting anything as concrete fact is a quality among the educated. When this was written, not everyone had the opportunity to be educated.

I'm all for freedom of speech...I just believe there are a lot of things though that are better off left unsaid. This is one of those rights that unfortunately people now a days have taken too far. With rights and freedom comes responsibility...and that responsibility requires common sense, respect, and consideration. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, beliefs, and having something to say...and everyone should have the right to express those, but there are a lot of people who don't believe it's a two-way street and anyone who dislikes, opposes, or disagrees with them should not have that right. People just need to stop being so self-centered as none of us lives in this world alone nor do we own it.

@ZonkeyBalls Thank you
Entwistle · 56-60, M
Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from the responsibility of what you say. And the consequences too.
ZonkeyBalls · 46-50, M
@Entwistle I agree 103.7 %

Insults are free speech too ijs

@Wraithorn We are becoming so wrapped up in the "issues" (and even creating them where there is none), that the actual problems are often overlooked and never dealt with. People love to make mountains out of molehills and complicate everything, and so it just becomes a big chaotic mess...so you're absolutely right.

@affinityterra It's terrible! 😟 People are calling each other dirty names in the name of friendship too?!
Thodsis · 51-55, M
Surely freedom of speech doesn't involve others allowing it. It's just freedom of speech.

I think Aristotle's quote is true as far as it goes.
Freedom of speech is something entirely different.

@Picklebobble2 Ok, fair enough, thanks. I should have ended off my question with,"within reason of course".
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Wraithorn But that gets to the heart of it doesn't it !
What you consider within reason somebody else may not.

@Picklebobble2 I know...! It is simply not an easy thing for everyone to agree on. Drawing the proverbial line in the sand is impossible without offending or oppressing someone in some way. Like trying to draw a line through a minefield. 🙂

Yes! 🌏️ A lot of people need to accept that the world doesn't evolve around their opinions only!
Entwistle · 56-60, M
What would be a good reason to not allow freedom of speech?
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@Entwistle I think we would first need to agree on what oversteps the boundaries of freedom of speech. I personally don't like people who incite violence. On the other hand...inciting violence can sometimes be the only way to bring people's attention to a problem that needs a solution. So it's a complicated thing.

Free speech is what civilized world is based on. Let the Neo-Nazis babble on... You don't have to pay any attention to them.

Yes. If you have the floor I will listen. Even if only an idiot would believe that and I get the same time to speak my side.
Some people I don't know what they're on but sometimes it seems I have to lead them to the fridge if I want another drink or to the rest room and listen while I evacuate. Its twice as bad of they are close talkers.
