Am I a bad guy? I don't think so

So some lady went on a tirade about me being racist for saying that it should be a requirement for foreign people who wish to live in the United States should learn English. each day I encounter people at my job who can't speak English at all not even broken English and even that in the work force slows everyone down.

Personally I don't have the time to keep bringing out my translator for temporary workers. and now I'm not saying they should forget their native tongue entirely but they need to learn enough for reasonable communication. any thoughts on this really I think that lady has no idea of what the word racist means my reasoning is very logical.

Its just common courtesy and respect for the people around you to know how to speak their language when YOU are in THEIR country.
This is America first and formost with everyone and the language here is english...PERIOD!
you're not a racist...i'll even flip it around by saying some of my coworkers are racist. they've been living in my country (canada) for over 20 plus years and have canadian citizenship. while we are conducting business they only speak in their native tongue. if they want to speak in it when i'm not involved or on breaks i'm cool with that...but when i'm involved i find it phukking rude...it's a kick in the teeth to our heritage....

I'm not racist either - I just don't have any respect for indigenous people who claim that foreigners should have basic English, when they themselves can't string a proper sentence together. "Pot-kettle-black"... "People who live in glass-houses shouldn't throw stones"...

Thats funny because if I moved to a foreign country, I think they would expect for me to be able to speak their language.

Not at all. Anyone moving to a different country to live should learn the language, obey the laws, and respect the customs.

Is what makes a successful country

There’s no official language in the USA . Furthermore Spanish is the fastest growing language in the states and will be spoken by a majority of the people in 2050.
So you’ll better start learning Spanish

@DaddyThomas interesting how the states doesn't have an official language like canada does (english and french) the problem in canada is we are so multicultural (especially with chinese in my parts) that the chinese don't need to learn english to get on with life.... they can conduct all aspects of life in chinese...doctors, restaurants, most jobs, legal stuff, drivers license etc...but good luck being from other countries where english isn't your first language. it is those people who learn to assimilate and learn canada's official languages quickly...when my parents emigrated from europe in the late 60s my dad could speak some english but quickly learned by actually speaking it with coworkers. mom quickly learned it by watching sesame street.

This is a very difficult time in the United States, where employers are trying to save themselves a nickel by hiring non-English speaking temps, who are abundant, and who will accept less pay than you receive.

I am sure it is extremely frustrating for you. IF these temps plan to continue working for your employer, it does seem to me that they should make an effort to learn the language.

BUT...I also remember all the people in my high school French class who, today, don't remember more than one or two words of French, and who can't carry on a conversation in French. Their minds go blank, they are afraid of making a mistake, or sounding stupid, so they just don't speak French at all.

I wonder if your temp workers are like that?

Until the Federal government declares a national language nothing will change
One discussion the argument was this is America & we're free to speak whatever we choose
specman · 51-55, M
I wouldn’t consider you a racist.

I believe that they need to be able to communicate.

Some of the schools here in uk are paying for up to 30 different translators and it really drags the british speaking kids down. I had a foreign taxi driver recently who i realised didnt have sat nav or understand it as he kept shouting "riggit...riggit" i finally worked out he was pronouncing the G in the word right...ie "do i go right?". It added an extra 15 mins to my journey and at least £25.

Plus, it’s a safety issue too.
I like the set up where the government has minimal control of individual lives

@beermeplease I'm not greatest at English but I can communicate so we understand each other,

The issue is people throw the word “racist” around WAY too much. No you aren’t racist and actually bring up some good points

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Exactly! They come here waving the flag, speaking the language, and demanding to live the same as they did in the country they "fled".
