We live in a world where genders are becoming irrelevant even for humans, and then we have the French language that defines genders for everything!

It's a beautiful language, but at the same time, it's unnecessarily annoying with all those stupid genders.

For example, if you want to say, "That shirt is white", first you have to see if the word "shirt" is male or female and then use the correct version of white for it. (blanc if it's male and blanche if it's female)

Just why? 😢

I think most languages have that bar English lol but then English is really basic
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@LookingForTheSummer even though my mum speaks perfectly good English i ask her to speak in gujrati with me just so i dont forget. My grandma who passed i didnt haveva choice so wes easier to flit between the two.

Are you learning french atm? Youll get there. I think once youve mastered the female/male terms youll find it way easier
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@Gangstress I love that every state has its own language in India. That leads to a very rich cultured country.
Yes, I am learning French. It's been a month now. It's a beautiful language, but it's very challenging. 😅
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@LookingForTheSummer aww youll get there i promise. Be patient too! Youre a clever guy x
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Do they have neutral gender too? Spanish doesn't seem to have it. Slavic languages do.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@CrazyMusicLover My own first name ends in -a 💀
Elessar · 26-30, M
@CrazyMusicLover Also, idk if it's a thing in Spain or elsewhere, here you can definitely get a nickname composed by an article that generally matches your gender, and a noun that doesn't. E.g. you're a guy and you appear clumsy in P.E. at school? Say no more, you're "il patata" now

Notable case is the son of an (in)famous politician who's called (yes, even formally in the news) "il Trota" (the trout). If you Google "il trota" chances are that you'll find him
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Elessar I heard that happens in Italy. 😅 Here it's a bit strange (or at least used to be) when a woman's name ends with something else than A.
deadgerbil · 22-25
That stuff messed me up so bad when I was taking French classes. So annoying and I'm glad English dropped that gender bs when describing stuff
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@deadgerbil Yes, I love that English always tries to be a modern language and has changed a lot with time. German and French, on the other hand... Lol
deadgerbil · 22-25
@LookingForTheSummer I dropped French and went with German. That too is a bunch of bs with the gender stuff. I'm so glad I'm finished with the language requirement
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@deadgerbil Yes, German can be as annoying as French. But at least French sounds good. 😄
SW-User
Be glad it's not Swahili or another Bantu language. Those languages can have upwards of ten genders and you have to know which noun is in which category to form the rest of the sentence.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@SW-User That's very scary. NGL. 🤣
Northwest · M
English is one of the few non-gendered languages in the world. All other European, Middle Easter, Hindi, are gendered. Mandarin is not.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@Northwest Yes, but in English, pronouns have genders (He/she). In my mother tongue, not even pronouns have genders, and I love that about it.
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
Attitudes flux back and forth. Language is fluid but it takes longer.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@WintaTheAngle Well, I really hope they do something about their language someday and get rid of all those stupid genders. 😄
WintaTheAngle · 41-45, M
@LookingForTheSummer There’s no reason too. It’s not making an assumption about an individual so there’s no reason to.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
If you think that is bad try seven tenses! Czech! 😆 There is only three in English!
Lilymoon · F
That's the one thing I hated about learning French
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@Lilymoon It's just very UNNECESSARY. 😅
Lilymoon · F
@LookingForTheSummer Oui Oui 🤭
spjennifer · 56-60, T
And that's why French versions of books have twice as many pages too 🤪
Maybe just get over it.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@TheLustyLord No, I want to complain about it. Lol
eMortal · M
Spanish the same

If gender is that irrelevant, how do people make babies?
DylanGuy · 22-25, M
gender is still very relevant and always will be.
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
parce que il est une langue tres difficile
caesar7 · 61-69, M
That's the beauty of the language. I am french Canadian and love speaking and writing it. It's unique in many ways.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@caesar7 Yes, I am practicing almost every day. 😄 I am determined to learn!

Did your French knowledge help you when you were learning Italian?
Some language apps help you find a native speaker and exchange language knowledge. For example, you'll find an Italian, and they will help you with Italian, and you can help them with English or French.
caesar7 · 61-69, M
@LookingForTheSummer Yes...all Latin-based languages. I could have taken Spanish in high school as it was an option but my interest was not there at that time. Wish I did when I went to Mexico but I understood some of it thanks to my french upbringing.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@caesar7 I heard learning Spanish can be easier for French speakers. 😄
But hey, it's never too late to start learning. My uncle is like 70, and he's learning German to keep his brain active. It's impressive.

empanadas · 31-35, M
Even for humans? Bruh bears, lions and animals don't care about what gender you classify. They just fuck.
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@empanadas Even for food. FYI, wine and sandwich are male, while beer and pizza are female. 🤣
empanadas · 31-35, M
@LookingForTheSummer I think it's a Latin thing because Spanish & Portuguese are the same. The sofa is a female but the couch is a male. I mean it's basically the same shit
LookingForTheSummer · 31-35, M
@empanadas Yes, I heard once you learn French, it will be easier for you to learn Spanish & Portuguese.
