We live in a world where genders are becoming irrelevant even for humans, and then we have the French language that defines genders for everything!

It's a beautiful language, but at the same time, it's unnecessarily annoying with all those stupid genders.

For example, if you want to say, "That shirt is white", first you have to see if the word "shirt" is male or female and then use the correct version of white for it. (blanc if it's male and blanche if it's female)

Just why? 馃槩

@caesar7 Is the French used in Quebec very different from the French in France? I heard pronunciations can be different.
caesar761-69, M
@LookingForTheSummer Yes but the written language is the same. I am from Ontario. We are known as franco-Ontarians and we have rights here just as much as our anglo population. I write the same way but our vocabulary is somewhat different as we are from Quebec or the acadien population on the east coast. We are 30% francophone where I am from.

@caesar7 Did you grow up only with the French language or both French and English? 馃

@LookingForTheSummer My parents were from Qu茅bec so my first language was French, was educated in french until I went to university. So yes, my first language is french.

@caesar7 I hope one day I become fluent in French. 馃槄

@LookingForTheSummer It is a difficult language but I am very happy that I maintained it being surrounded by the English language. I try to tell my son that but he doesn't believe the importance of keeping it up is a necessity. I disagreed of course but it is his choice. He is losing it quickly unfortunately.

@caesar7 Knowing different languages is very beneficial. It helps the brain a lot.

Yes, French is very hard. It's been only a month now, and for me, learning it is like studying for another master's degree. It takes that amount of effort and time!

@LookingForTheSummer ...and daily practice in speaking it. I find it enriches a person if they know more than one language. I have studied others, Italian and german but I haven't continued to learn it. No time and nobody to practice it with! We do have a large Italian community here but I have no friends with which I could hang around with and speak Italian all day! All this to say that speaking french here, in my community, is much easier.

@caesar7 Yes, I am practicing almost every day. 馃槃 I am determined to learn!

Did your French knowledge help you when you were learning Italian?
Some language apps help you find a native speaker and exchange language knowledge. For example, you'll find an Italian, and they will help you with Italian, and you can help them with English or French.

@LookingForTheSummer Yes...all Latin-based languages. I could have taken Spanish in high school as it was an option but my interest was not there at that time. Wish I did when I went to Mexico but I understood some of it thanks to my french upbringing.

@caesar7 I heard learning Spanish can be easier for French speakers. 馃槃
But hey, it's never too late to start learning. My uncle is like 70, and he's learning German to keep his brain active. It's impressive.
