What was the first search engine you remember using?

Ask Jeeves was mine

Either Ask Jeeves or Yahoo, I can't remember (it's an age thing, you know?) I have used Google but rarely for many years and do not have it as a default on any device. Startpage is good - no tracking, no ads and seems to work well.
@SomeMichGuy Suddenly I’m smelling printer’s ink and dusty paper and our library.
@Mamapolo2016 Walking the stacks was also fun...

It's nice to know others who are aware of the full-sensory experience of real libraries...

@Mamapolo2016 @SomeMichGuy All those things bring back great student-day memories, but the best resource in the Library was always the Librarian. They could always get you to where you needed to be.

Long before the web there was a program and protocol called gopher. It applied to documents. Before that there was Archie. Though gopher I used more.

In 95 I switched to Dejanews which Google bought out later. Dejanews supported Usenet is why. Not yahoo.

Yeah I'm a relic. I have posts on Google's Usenet archive when it was Dejanews.

Yeah I’m pretty sure it was AskJeeves. But I also used Netscape so that may have had a search bar

My favorite used to be Hotbot. It had special fields for exact phrase searches and fields where you can put in terms to exclude, and it would actually exclude the terms you didn't want. Google has never been able to do that, even when you use the plus and minus signs. And it hasn't improved any. They just got rid of their competition.

@LordShadowfire Little incentive to improve if your competition are non-existent
Alta Vista

OK, I used Archie & Gopher earlier, but they weren't web search engines; they mostly indexed FTP directories.

Yahoo. I still use yahoo. But I also use Google too.

@Sroonaka616 I remember them. The big attraction was you can use several different companies' search engines all at once.
Yahoo, I think…
Or Bing ? 🤔

@UBotMate I loved their gimmick. Few people these days now that another name for a search engine was a search spider, because it would search the web. Those guys leaned into it.
Lugwho · 61-69, M
Maybe Alta Vista
Corporalcolleague · 61-69, M
Dogpile and AltaVista
