I would be extremely happy for the world. It would do wonders for our ability to socialise, concentrate and be present in the real world. Social media is deliberately designed to constantly distract and manipulate us and waste our time, and it doesn't even enable meaningful communication and social contact. In fact, it does the exact opposite. I've just been reading a book, Stolen Focus by Johann Hari, which advocates banning it outright. That sounds extreme, but it's probably what needs to happen.

Not much initially at face value, I don't use it a lot personally. One downside, I wouldn't be able to advertise my knitting and dress creations as easily. One positive, the kids I teach wouldn't be so addicted to it. Everything has its good or bad sides.

It'll not change anything like my life will be still be the same horrible life but I guess at the end it's just all about the friends I've made here online, I'll miss them more , life feels Little bearable when I've such good n caring friends
Gingerbreadspice · F
I wouldn’t be able to contact a lot of people. I wouldn’t be able to easily book appointments or find someone to help me out with anything. I wouldn’t be able to see if there are other people in the world just like me. Initially life wouldn’t be so easy but people would stop being lazy. I would forget all about (him) and I would move on.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Gingerbreadspice Appointments etc. should not be a problem. The question is about "social media", not official or institutional web-sites, e-mails or the Internet generally.
Gingerbreadspice · F
@ArishMell I use Facebook to book my hair appointment and wax appointments. Also to find work or reply to people who contact me about anything important. Instagram and TikTok are just for fun though.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Gingerbreadspice I just telephone or call into the shop to book a haircut!
I am on one or two closed club round-robins but there are other ways to find more widespread information. My health-centre for example, has its own web-site for appointments and repeat prescriptions; and it contacts me by text-message when necessary. (My portable 'phone allows that but is not linked to the Internet.)
Sometimes some of my friends do talk about things of mutual interest to me as well, that they've seen on Facebook but I just let that pass by. They know I don't use the site and if they need contact me they can e-post or ring.
The nearest I've seen of TikTok are odd screen-grabs on here, and no, it is certainly not for any serious use!

Return me to my childhood. Provided that it was universal, there are aspects of that that would be very welcome: it might bring back more constructive, objective journalism in broadcast and print media. But OMG, the work in manually scoring my Fantasy Baseball League from the weekly box scores in Baseball Weekly 😱
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
I've reduced my social media to just three sites since covid started.
Once it became clear how governments and the big social media companies either lied or used it for disinformation to promote a point of view, much of it proved irritating (and still does)

I'm guessing this might also mean less spread of misinformation, which could be a very good thing.
TheOneyouwerewarnedabout · 46-50, MVIP
@Poppies everyone would be back on the msm teet. getting a one way narrative...
like. talk about misinformation

I would lose some of the most powerful and meaningful connections I've ever made. And my heart would break to lose them.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
Not much. This is the only site I’m really on. I’d miss the interaction with a few special people, but real life keeps me busy.
calicuz · 56-60, M
It wouldn't really change. I would miss everyone on SW, but that's about it.

Now that I know Nazis and communists are constantly watching us, I've ditched all of them, save one, SW. 😌
HumanEarth · F
I would shit myself to freedom. Now only of cellphones could go bye overnight and go back to the old phones and payphones
HumanEarth · F
I hate cellphones. They destroyed human freedom and encouraged warrantless searches and spying of the phones without anyones knowledge
