Tell me one interesting fact about your job that most people outside wouldn't know

I'll start first: most of the cakes you get from bakeries come in frozen and prepared. Even in really nice bakeries we get frozen bases to ensure consistency. The designs are always fresh and we put a lot of work in but most people expect a freshly baked sponge every time
gdon39 · 41-45, M
It’s amazing to me how foolish people can be and think they can get away with it.

I’m a risk/loss, fraud, and arson investigator/consultant. People try to avoid me, never return calls or don’t show up to scheduled meetings.

Lie to me, hide things and coverups are just going to make me angry and then I am going to surveil your every move and find everything there is to find out and then you will surely be very upset when I take your business license, your ability to get insurance for seven years at any price.

It’s best not to poke investigator and make my job harder bc I could have been sympathetic had they acted in good faith with me.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@gdon39 I hope you are not biased!
gdon39 · 41-45, M
@Soph03 I carry no malice or bias. I don’t create issues, they do and I can’t unsee things or I can be sued and my errors and omissions insurance will be cancelled and I will be sued and out of business.
Jazz402006 · 56-60, M
@gdon39 one of the best posts I have seen on here, brilliant, from the horse’s mouth..👍👍
JustJordan · 22-25, F
Most soldiers don't actually see combat. I usually don't shoot my rifle unless I'm qualifying or doing target practice!
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@JustJordan but ultimately you train for war?
JustJordan · 22-25, F
@Soph03 yes 😒
MoonlightLullaby · 41-45, F
@JustJordan Thank you for your service 💙🙏
Gusman · 61-69, M
Steel does not contain water.
When you heat steel with a torch, water will form several inches away in all directions from the flame.
This occurs because the gas being burned to produce the flame is a hydrocarbon, which is composed of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon.
When consumed in a chemical reaction such as a flame, the by-products are mainly carbon dioxide and water.
As the hot gases from the flame containing this water get farther away from the flame, the cooler temperatures of the ambient air and steel surface cause the water to condense out of the gases and collect on the surface of the steel plate.
This phenomenon appears to be water coming out of the steel, which we all know is impossible.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Gusman Propane heat stoves in a tent will cause condensation. That’s one reason why small wood-burning tent stoves are preferred for so many campers now. Plus firewood usually can be gathered for free.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Gusman this is a great example of the answer I was looking for!

That is very interesting. My family, on my dad's side, were bakers going back generations. Everything was made from scratch. There are both chain "bakeries," from Dunkin Donuts, which have their donuts delivered every day, to others that receive prepared dough, like Paneras, to local ones that still make the dough from scratch. The local bagel store has it's bakery behind it, and you actually see bags of high gluten flour they use. The larger supermarkets also bake fresh, again you see their big, industrial mixers.

@samueltyler2 you probably wouldn't know most of my friends praised our freshness and then when I told them the bases were frozen they said they could taste it all along!
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Soph03 I am sure you are correct. But, it is surprising that your bakery used the frozen dough. I wonder what percentage does?

I often make enough dough for many loaves. I do the first rise and then knead it and form my loaf, then freeze the dough. That way, the thawing accomplishes defrosting and a second rise. Then baking gives the aroma and feel of fresh-baked bread.

I am an actuarist who models risk on behalf of a pension fund.

Most people are functionally innumerate and incapable of making rational financial decisions. With declining trust in professional advisors and myriad ways in which to lose large amounts of money quickly on the internet, this makes for turbulence in financial markets 😐
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@SunshineGirl That sounds fascinating. My father is in the property insurance industry and for a long time I wanted to get into the actuary field to model natural disaster and terrorism risk but I found the concept too depressing.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Turtlepower I understand. I don't particularly enjoy my job, but it fits in well with the way in which my brain works and I have found my niche in the market.

I consider myself an economist first and foremost and that economics is accurately described as the "dismal science". I first used my analytical skills to 'prove' that my dad's gambling addiction was irrational . . for all the good that did 🤷‍♀️
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@SunshineGirl sadly addiction/misplaced hope > logic > statistics I understand though.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
One keystroke can mean the difference in life and death in emergencies.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Fungirlmmm way too much pressure I think
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@Soph03 Way too much.

The glamorous on-stage life isn't as nice as Hollywood and the red carpet wants it to seem. This killed my dream to have a career as an actor. It's a ruthless business where the word "too sick to do your job" simply is none existent.

If you work as an actor, there's no mercy, zero. You are sick? Puking? You will deliver, every single person in the team counts on you and so you'll go out on stage, do your thing, hold your shit or puke or blood in, til you are behind stage, where there's a bucket and perhaps a nurse waiting to patch you up.

I had a real bad influensa and fever, my voice felt like knives each time I spoke. I remember pouring a bottle of cough meds like a shot in between the acts. Just to be able use my voice. I have never pushed my body so much before. It was extremely unhealthy. And yet this is nothing compared to actors who are big. Who maybe are told to lose or gain weight for a character or something else extreme.

Let's just say I'm not jealous on any celebrity. And they deserve every penny for the work they go through for our entertainment.

Two thirds of guitar students give up learning theory when the subject of 'Modes' comes up.
Modes are a natural part of music theory.
No sax or piano players struggle with Modes ..only guitar players.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Entwistle so much of music is really math, why didn't the inventors take advantage of it?
Entwistle · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2 Music is all maths.
It's always evolving..music theory.
Descriptive but not prescriptive!
It's all only convention.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Entwistle absolutely. Some of our pieces have very complex rhythms, you have to count very carefully.

It’s not glamorous but it’s very interesting to say the least

Very few people have absolute pitch. The scientific explanation just isn't known. A lecturer at college once asked if anyone present actually had it. Nobody put their hand up including me, because occasionally it seems to temporarily go, especially if one is nervous about making a fool of oneself. But 95% of the time if I hear a certain pitch I can name the key on the piano that will reproduce it. It has to be some kind of freak of memory, possibly connected with my father being a piano tuner although he didn't have it. Its really only of curiosity value. Recently watching something on tv I heard a sound that maintained a certain pitch even though it wasn't a musical instrument. I said "that's Bflat, a 7th. above middle C". My wife checked it on the piano and it was, even though I haven't played the piano for ages.
Magnolia21 · 22-25, F
The pellets we make are actually super safe. Someone even "accidentally" swallowed one with no ill effects or radiation damage.
Magnolia21 · 22-25, F
@samueltyler2 I'm sure rods are used still, but pellets are safer. A couple could power a large house for a year no problem.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Magnolia21 It would be interesting if there ever were a way for a house to have a small reactor powered that way. In the meantime, solar with batteries is the current best technology to get off of the grid!
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Magnolia21 thank you for sharing this! Is your work challenging?
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
People think Modelling is glamorous and easy. While it is to some extent glamorous it is hard work and physically demanding 🙂
Dlrannie · 31-35, F
@JimboSaturn At times yes it can be 🙂
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Dlrannie i have always wondered what being a model is like.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Dlrannie I can imagine it has a very high barrier of entry!
Emjay · 18-21, F
I work part-time as a front desk hotel clerk. We're required to exact hidden charges and to lie about their 'beneficial' nature. The money goes straight to the owner.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Emjay that's upsetting. Any way to avoid these?
Emjay · 18-21, F
@Soph03 Scan the bill and demand anything suspicious to be removed. They must comply.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
There is nothing interesting about finance.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@JimboSaturn that's the kind of interesting fact I was looking for! Thank you for sharing
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@JimboSaturn i understand the profit on each item is low, but combined the stores can do well.
@JimboSaturn At least give us some helpful tips

I have The fact that I get to supervise projects all across the world is one of the most exciting aspects of my profession. Among these activities are visits to clients' locations and participation in trade shows and conventions. This can be both thrilling and draining, since it requires me to stay in a variety of hotels and airports to keep tabs on the progress of the various projects I oversee. On the other hand, it helps me expand my knowledge of the fields in which I work and the wants and needs of my target demographic. I've just shared what's on my mind; if you want me to do anything else, give me orders. 😄😄😄

I work in insurance……. Soooooo 🫤
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Miklee02 anything interesting?
Miklee02 · 51-55, F
@Soph03 I said … I work in insurance 😅

@Miklee02 I think you missed the point of the ask lol

I work less than 40 hours a week.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@MrGomco what role?
We're contract labor and not treated as employees under state laws.
Americans like this for my class. They're sadistic and selfish.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@Roundandroundwego that's depressing but thanks for sharing
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Roundandroundwego that is a really terrible loophole and big business gets away with it. They don't have to pay benefits, if you are lucky, you may get paid more, and can deduct as business expenses things other than directly.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
Ehh it's hard without saying something proprietary, but people would be surprised to learn how often basic hardware delays affect aeroengine delivery dates lol
alan20 · M
They start extremely early in the morning. We used to live in a flat above one and it was goodbye sleep. It did have its compensations.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@alan20 yes we have very unsociable hours
alan20 · M
@Soph03 Didn't know you had connections to bakery. It must be hard work but is an invaluable service.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I knew some of the corporate stores did that. I didn’t realize the nice bakeries did it though.
Soph03 · 18-21, F
@cherokeepatti it's still good quality stuff but for consistency (and to save cost for the customer) the sponge comes in frozen
Dshhh · M
The best way to run a bar, is to not drink.

@Stereoguy I can't wait to get to this stage!
Since Covid and Brexit, school places have gone down thousands as people left the city. This means less money for schools. Yet the number of children and families needing fimancial support has increased. Our percentage of children needing financial support has doubled ftom 30 to 60%. We're one of many.

@V00doo oh no are you a teacher? Thanks for sharing!
@Soph03 Yep. Thank you.
