Very few people have absolute pitch. The scientific explanation just isn't known. A lecturer at college once asked if anyone present actually had it. Nobody put their hand up including me, because occasionally it seems to temporarily go, especially if one is nervous about making a fool of oneself. But 95% of the time if I hear a certain pitch I can name the key on the piano that will reproduce it. It has to be some kind of freak of memory, possibly connected with my father being a piano tuner although he didn't have it. Its really only of curiosity value. Recently watching something on tv I heard a sound that maintained a certain pitch even though it wasn't a musical instrument. I said "that's Bflat, a 7th. above middle C". My wife checked it on the piano and it was, even though I haven't played the piano for ages.
