We always had them as children, but there was just a picture behind each door. By the time I had children, there were chocolates behind each door. Now there are all sorts aimed at adults, with cheese, alcohol, perfume, or other gifts for each day.
@SwampFlower oooh that sounds good. Thank you, I will go to Aldi I live 5 minutes away from one. I didn't know that they had food in them I was just thinking candy and snacks.
@AngelUnforgiven no; more like the one in the image you used - a sorta sturdy box (set of boxes, I suppose) that you can use over and over again. most of the ones I've seen for sale are cheap card/pasteboard meant to be ripped open for the day and thrown out after the season. I had one that was all puzzles. another that's a mini christmas tree, each day you pull out some new ornament for it. I've heard costco has a 5 foot tall one with lindt chocolates that goes for 2 or 300 dollars.
