I Think This Might Be The Year When Gifts Of Food Will Become The Trend For Christmas Gift-Giving…

With looming food shortages due to food processing facilities being destroyed by fires or whatever and floods wiping out crops and stored grains etc.
Food baskets with beans, rice, potatoes & other staples. I don’t know how many are stocking up and trying to figure out what they need but it will get critical eventually.

This year hunters can get free deer processing if they donate 50% of their meat at certain shops

@Azlotto My neighbor was trapping for furs one winter and he had caught raccoons. One evening after skinning the animals he was drinking and decided to put a raccoon in the smoker. He calls my husband over and I watched him take his knife and slice off a piece and eat it and he said it tasted just like smoked ham. He smoked a few of them after them. The possums he saved up in a big trash bag in his deep freeze and when he got 20-30 he would take them to a man he worked with who paid him $2 each…paid for his diesel fuel for his little Luv truck that he used to make his trapping rounds every evening.

@cherokeepatti Interesting...I wonder what the man did with the possums...I'd have to be starving before I'd eat one.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Azlotto He roasted them with sweet potatoes, possums are really greasy. I can’t imagine them smelling good since they eat everything including garbage, cat crap, venomous snakes, etc

I believe you are correct. Food baskets will be very welcome.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou I’m thinking even a bag of potatoes, a couple bags of beans, some rice, canned veggies & fruits & baking supplies will be welcome. And people will learn the meaning of hospitality and appreciate it much more.
I think this is actually a very thoughtful and great gift idea for this year.
Sepia · 36-40, F
That’s being practical and sincere.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
Great idea! Aldi gift cards would be nice too.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti Aldi can be a dangerous place starting at about this time of year. German holiday goodies are showing up.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring I can’t have anything with gluten so I am safe
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Crazywaterspring Here’s a little tip if you don’t have a quarter

I have thought about stocking up with canned goods, but my problem is that I have to be on a very low histamine diet and can’t have canned foods.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Mardrae if you can dehydrate veggies and store them it might be good, no salt needed. You have to rehydrate them and then cook them but it would be a good option. You can buy frozen veggies like peas ,mixed veggies etc and skip the blanching that is usually required for veggies & dehydrate them for an easier option.
Mardrae · F
I’m sorry- I meant to put low histamine diet. I have MCAS. I edited my post. All canned foods are very high histamine @cherokeepatti
I'm good for canned goods... if I need anything food wise, it would be frozen foods and dried foods like cereals, pasta (and sauces) and things like that.

i always liked that Fruit Cake stuff
FurryFace · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti i heard people used them for door stoppers , i wish , then i could go around collecting em all from shop fronts
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@FurryFace I think that was just a joke. What they did was regift them to other people and they kept going around until someone who actually liked it kept it for themselves.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@FurryFace we have world famous fruit cakes here that's made by a college. Pricey but delicious
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I already been stocking up on soup.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MrBrownstone I have stocked up on some canned veggies & fruit and pantry basics like beans and rice. Can make a lot of pantry meals with that. Also have a container of spices because beans or lentils on a regular basis needs to be seasoned up well and with different flavors for different meals or you will get burnt out on them. I have found some real bargains at the discount store (Amazon and other store returns) on some pantry items like cans of dry milk, cocoa mix, Mac & cheese etc…even gluten-free items I’ve gotten quite a few of those (and they are expensive in regular stores)
Azlotto · M
I would give some of my home-canned foods as gifts, but they would think I'm trying to poison them.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou It was all good food. We had a Jersey cow that gave a lot of cream, very rich flavor. Butter, fudge, cream pies and whipped cream were really tasty made with the cream and rich milk. We grew the fruit to make jams & jellies and my uncle butchered the hog and smoked the hams and bacon. Pretty sure that the family ate good during the holidays when the kids were home from school.

@cherokeepatti Ham is SO good. I haven't had any for two years now.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou I haven’t had any in 55 years but that’s OK.

Home made breads, cookies, candy, etc... I've sent packages like that before.
Working on ideas for this year now. :)

People closer to home, I have given food. A food gift card gets a bit hard to do if you don't have the same grocery stores from city to city or state to state.
