Not currently, but most of the electricity in my region comes from hydroelectric generators with a mix of wind and nuclear, so the diversity of energy sources makes things flow pretty smoothly here.
When I lived in hot, humid Texas, it was a bit more common to have rolling blackouts. They would shut down electricity for a certain area for about an hour before bringing back up and shutting it down somewhere else.
It was miserable because there was nothing you could really do to cool yourself down during that time. You just laid around waiting for the power to come back on, because moving meant burning energy. The humidity in the summer is a near constant 100, so your sweat can't physically evaporate in order to cool you off. It actually can be deadly.

They Might!
So Many of the whiny Idiots you speak of will Require Intensive Therapy to mitigate the mental anguish , anxiety, depression and such caused by a Major Long Term, (≥1 Week), Smart Phone Outage!
IF a Massive Telecommunications Outage occured then the tech savy under 30 crowd's connectivity codependency with their peers would Cripple the Generation and badly damage the targeted economy that revolves around their habits!!
How would they work, call themselves an Uber, order lunch, plan virtual meetups, chat during meals, play games, use any of 10,000 Apps??

@Incomplet If you think the older gens will thrive any better I have bad news for you. What'll be of all the 50+ without their beloved 24h of hate spewing, "goodmorning, coffee!" and conspiracy sharing sessions on Facebook? Their brains will atrophy if disconnected, and they've already abundantly demonstrated as recently as the past two years how adaptable they are to any such changes in their lifestyles. Let alone if outlets like Fox News go down. 😰

Very rare. Been years.
But I have this secret wish that electricity shuts completely down on this city one night. Then I can enjoy stargazing without having to go to rural areas or the desert, lol

We rarely have powercuts in my area.
As a IT GUY, I'll be jobless without electricity.

Rarely. It happens when the grid is stressed during heat waves or during maintenance. One time it went down during a storm, but I live in an area that doesn't normally get severe weather. I admit that I'm not used to power outages. The longest I've been without it was 17 hours.
Miram · 31-35, F
@SW-User stressed by the ac I bet. Some nerd needs make better ones that consume less energy .
SW-User
@Miram It's remarkable how little AC technology has changed since it was invented. Air conditioners are still inefficient, noisy, power-draining devices. There has to be some better cooling tech out there!
SW-User
Yes I've lost power for days in the dead of winter it can be deadly that and excessive heat. We have had blackouts due to heat too
SW-User
@Miram we have a crisis in my city of homeless they live in tents along the freeway and in neighborhoods and sidewalks and there is a serious drug problem. The community is really struggling and no one seems to be able to figure out how to fix it. We have shelters, but people don't use them and it's really sad state of affairs
Miram · 31-35, F
@SW-User
I know too much about the abuse in shelters to support them.

@Miram yes I know they can be bad

Do you never ever get electricity shut down where you live at?
No! Well except when I lived near the ocean and a hurricane would come through once in a while.The way people talk about the energy crisis make it sound like they will die without it.
I will 🥺 I need A.C. and Ice (This was a joke response, but thinking about it more, I do need electricity for a machine for my health)
Viper · M
@Miram I'd say I've never had major hurricane damage, usually power being out a couple of days was the worst, though one year it was flooding but stopped about a 100 meters from my house.
Never went through a hurricane stronger than Category 1, my Dad's rule was if it's going to be a Category 2 or higher, we're leaving... and we almost left a couple of times, but it dropped down before hitting.
Before we moved into that house, we had it inspected, and roof was bad... so they made the owners agree to pay for a replacement before allowing the sell and during that, I watched a tall, but extremely thin and seemingly very light young man literally fall through the roof... from water damage...
Lucky for him, it was sort of a slow motion thing, where it was fast enough he couldn't get out of the way, but slow him he was able to realize it, process it, and grab a joist (which lucky wasn't water damaged) and was able to catch himself...
So basically, he went from standing on the roof, to falling into a pull up position from the joist... other than some scratches and maybe a clean pair of underwear, he was alright, and had a fun story to tell.

The west is weak.. so incredibly weak.. a spoiled babied popularition that hasn't the slightest clue of how the rest of the world has to fight for so much, and endure. Thats not the sad part even.. the sad part is most ciuld care less how weak they are.
Incomplet · 22-25
@Coppercoil Much sad truth ...
The strong will continue survive and life will struggle some, then overcome and flourish on all the better ...
🤔 Unless of course the BIG Mountain size Asteroid 🌠 hits Earth smack into a Land Mass instead of one of the Oceans! It won't matter too much what your Life Style WAS as you're freezing 🥶 to Death from an Extinction Event like That!

They’re shutting it down at midnight tonight and it’s almost 22:00! I’m just counting the hours. We won’t last a night in this desert heat without at least a ceiling fan! We’re done for! 🤣

We have a couple of outages most every winter - usually due to ice build up on trees and down they come taking out power lines. Outages range from a day to a couple of weeks. Just depends upon how severe and widespread the outage is.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
It's extremely rare now, tbh. If there's a power cut, it only lasts seconds at most and I don't even remember when did that happen last time. When I was a kid, I remember it was common during storms but not anymore.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
Never
Ok wait. 20 years ago we had no power for several days and had to cook on the bbq since couldn’t use the stove.

Last time it happened I was sent home from work once the UPS battery was depleted. If it happens regularly, many offices will consider reducing the staff, I presume, or shut down altogether. Or finally we'll get solar panels installed on building roofs and parking lots?
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Elessar I'm moving into one the 25th lol
Elessar · 26-30, M
@basilfawlty89 Good luck. If I'll ever be able to purchase a house it'll strictly be independent, I've spend too much of my life already in these rat cages
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@Elessar eh, my living situation with my landlord at the moment is utterly terrible. I can live with an apartment for now. I'll buy a house when I can afford it and it will likely be overseas as I'm kinda tired of South Africa.
deadgerbil · 26-30
Never deliberately, only if there's a storm and power lines go down but they are usually back up again the next day
Jessmari · 41-45
Only during the occaisional noreaster.
PiecingBabyFaceTogether · 31-35, M
Rarely both here and back home.

It dies here and there, but for the most part no. When I lived in Alaska. Pretty often in the winter.
sarabi · F
Yes, we do. The gov tries to "save" too, and it's insanely expensive
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@sarabi same in South Africa.
DDonde · 31-35, M
It happened to my entire town one night last summer but it's very very rare for us to lose power
No. It's always on. We get random black outs, but last one was 4 years ago. It's cold here.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
The opposite. We have rolling blackouts here on schedule. It's going off today from 3pm-5pm.
MethDozer · M
Only occasionally from storms and rarely last more than a few hours. Used to be much more common occurance and could last a few days. I kinda miss thise days to be honest.
Miram · 31-35, F
@MethDozer
I had major blackout last year. More than half of my property's energy plan was from a military institution. When that happened, everything got fried , cold rooms, ac, tvs, light bulbs..everything >_> i remember being so angry.
But I the time I spend with my loved ones fixing it was precious. Lot people stepped in to check and help. Espacially with watering and side jobs.
And at night we would all gather around fire and play cards or other games. It was nice.
