My father pulling into our gravel driveway, which meant it was time to go hide in my room.

I grew up during the steam to diesel change on the railroad so miss the sound of those engines fighting gravity as they pulled cars up the valley. Also the sound of the whistles, clacking of the wheels on rail joints and the bells of the crossing gates.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@SageWanderer Diesel trains also make a clacking sound on rail joints. Neil Diamond mentioned it in his hit song "Beautiful Noise" in 1976, and steam trains had been discontinued quite some time before then so he must have been thinking of a diesel train.

Depending on where we were living in my growing up years? It would be hearing a train whistle, a barge on the Rhine River blowing a horn, and church bells chiming. Not that I never hear two of those things anymore, just more rarely.
agetheweebeast · 41-45, M
Great question! I love your observations and agree too. Hmmm....I don't hear church bells as often. Or bee's. Kettles don't sound as good to me when they boil now. I miss the soft but distinct click of remote control buttons too.

My grandfather yelling at everyone. That man could bellow like a rutting moose. He had a booming voice and just like to holler😄

@TrashCat My paternal grandfather also had a deep, booming voice. I was kind of afraid of him. I remember one time, he was fussing at me because I’d left clutter in the living room—in Creole. My father came in and began to translate. Grandfather was waving his arms, yelling.
Pop said, in his calm voice,"Your grandfather is rather disappointed that you didn’t pick up your toys. Could you do so now, please ?" I began cleaning up. Pop shrugged at Grandfather, who patted my head and left the room. 😅

@bijouxbroussard Great story! Thank you for sharing that. I wasn't afraid of my gramps and was the grandchild who would stand up to him at an early age. He used to tell everyone I was his favorite grandson because I didn't put up with his crap often telling him he was a big baboon. lol

Quiet. Solitude with no whitesound in the background from traffic, surface or air, no cellphones or other devices within hearing distance. Just the quiet solitude of nature with an occasional steer or calf bawling in the distance.

The grand prix on a sunday. My dad would watch it most of the day on the tv downstairs so the soundtrack to our sunday would be NEEEEOOWWWWM 🤣🤣 I expect it's still the same but I don't watch it anymore.
PEACH4LIFE · 46-50, F
My daddy laughing while watching tv. I used to crawl in his lap wrap my arms around him and put my ear to his chest and listen to his heartbeat and hear his deep rumble of laughter.

The sound of trains moving on the tracks and the flocking of seagulls. Rewinding vhs tapes

Waves crashing on the beach in the background.
The milk truck in the morning.
The hum of mixed conversations in the coffee room.
People laughing out in public.
Sounds of kids walking to school.
The kettle whistling when its boiled.
Wood being chopped.
Neighbours talking over the fence.
