Any ideas how to stop fear of blood pressure check?

I have had white coat syndrome many years. My actual blood pressure is ok but as soon as ANY cuff goes on my arm, my heart races. I'm afraid of it being high, which of course MAKES it high. It's self fulfilling prophecy. The root fear is that I should be thinner (Even though my blood pressure has always been ok).

My mom would ridicule that I should always catch everything that could possibly be wrong, health wise. It was oppressive and made me fear many things, especially blood pressure because I could have *prevented* it, if it were to be high. I really don't want to fear this anymore. I've even avoided going on doctor visits because I know they'll do blood pressure checks. I brought it up to my therapist but they don't help... many times they just nod. 😧 Any ideas to lessen the fear?

Ah! So it been "Grilled in" in u by your mum? Am afraid yer gonna have to find your own way Coralmist. Something that is grilled in by parent will remain.

I have my counselor who has helped me A LOT to understand me about me it took about 11 sessions I feel stronger. My past doesn't affect my future, my anger has reduced drastically (the inner anger unnoticed by people) and I make decisions in a leadership manner more or less.

So to me it looks like it been grilled in wha can u do? Just know that if we think something bad is gonna happen it will not happen we only thought it might happen.

Therapist do set out homeworks we should try and do what they tell us at least give it two week attempt.
First, are you on any medications for blood pressure issues? You might consider getting a blood pressure monitor.
This way you can check it st home without any anxiety.. And keep a weekly or monthly record which you can bring to your medical appt and show your doctor.
And whether it’s measured at home or in a doctor’s office it will be whatever it is.

@soar2newhighs So unfortunately any cuff will make my mind and heart race... Even home ones
@Coralmist Well I hope you get over it.

Did you know that many people have different blood pressures on opposite arms?? Consider going to have your pressure checked, not to see if its high. But to see if you have a low side..Knowing that may reduce the stress of having it taken..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman Interesting ...I appreciate thar🌼

Your blood pressure goes up because of this white coat syndrome then I wouldn’t be worrying about it so much. But then again, I tend not to worry about things.

@Jenny1234 It's just I have a physical coming up, and the fear will occur again and then because it's been multiple times, she wants me on a small dose blood pressure pill..just for precautions. Even my therapist thought that was a bit much.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
@Coralmist did you tell your doctor that you think your blood pressure goes up just because of the fear of the appointment?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Jenny1234 I did yes but she said because I occasionally get anxious in other areas too outside the doctor office, that's why she wanted to try small dose. But she's someone who is overly cautious. I've read anxiety does not harm the heart ....
buy a blood pressure monitor for at home and do a check it regularly to make certain it's ok. has a memory built in so bring it with you to the doctor

@saragoodtimes Even at home I get panicked because as soon as the cuff tightens my mind and heart races
@Coralmist eventually you'll get used to it and will show your true blood pressure

I'd suggest to work with your breath. Focus on your breathing as fear arises and feel the fear through. See what it does and just remain observant.

try meditating, also have the office repeat the BP several times, and record it at home and show them the records.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
They have watches that take blood pressure. If you are already wearing it you won't be so fearful.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@AngelUnforgiven I have a fit watch and it did take my BP... They say they're not as accurate as arm cuff but I'll see if my doctor is ok with it..🙂
Does your pressure run in the “ normal” range, or is it usually high or low?
And when the cuff tightens, realize that is a design as part of the mechanics of obtaining blood pressure readings.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@soar2newhighs Yes so true it's just measuring..that's where the fear is, the measuring...my mind thinks ohh I should've this or that or lost more weight, Even though when I'm at full rest and my doctor is chatting and I'm not paying attention, it's normal. I really HATE anxiety, the what ifs
@Coralmist Step 1. Keep your BP under control. Step 2. when the cuff is being inflated, remember…without that your BP cannot be obtained, so don’t let it trigger you.

If there's a problem they will wait a few extra minutes and distract you with idle chitchat. It works surprisingly well

I aways close my eyes and picture myself at the beach.
my blood pressure is always bad
pdockal · 56-60, M
Get your own bp cuff
Check when you wake & before bed
Send data to your doctor regularly
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
Put it on, then close your eyes and breath deep and slow for a few minutes. Meditate. Be at one with the Force. Then press the button.
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
Get one for your home and keep track of it for your next appointment
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Cigarguy101 Even home cuffs do it, my mind and heart race as soon as cuff tightens. I can message her maybe to have her do it while we talk..it's often normal then.. because I'm not really paying attention, just talking.
For me I always hated that the cuff was squeezing my arm off. My Dad was an RN when I was a little kid and one day he was taking my Great Grandfather's pressure and I asked for mine to be done, as soon as it felt like my arm was going to fall off I ripped the tube out, my Dad cracked up laughing.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@NativePortlander1970 Ugh I hate that too. I've tried doing it at home and the home one squeezes it even way more than a doctor s!!! So I can't even try to get a home reading. ☹
@Coralmist Both my home cuffs would make boa constrictors proud.

@NativePortlander1970 one on each arm ?👀🤣
