How Low Is Too Low For Blood Pressure For Someone Who Is Almost 70 years Old?

I went to Sam’s Club today to pickup a rotisserie chicken and some other things for lunch. Decided to sit down and get my BP checked at the machine next to the pharmacy area. It was 82/50. And marked as “normal”. Just a couple months ago my primary care doctor wanted to put me on blood pressure meds but I decided to stop drinking coffee and my BP came down.

As far as I know low is below 90/60 but a single reading can be very inaccurate. Perhaps the monitor was giving off numbers or you were particularly tired on that day
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Nunki it was today and I wasn’t tired
82/50 could be fine. Are you athletic?

I had a friend who had a BP something like 70/50. When nurses would take her BP, they would call for the doctor and a crash cart stat!
The doctor would look at her, and ask if she was an athlete? She said she was.

@Guardian About 35 years ago I went to a health fair at work and they had test for lung capacity. I had to blow into a tube to measure it. It was the first time I ever got this test. I could hear the two testers getting excited and telling me to keep blowing. I did and when it was finished they said they had aerobic trainers tested that didn’t test as high as my reading. I worked hard is why. Never got into sports but I did use my energy to work hard and did most all of my life.

@NativePortlander1970 Might be because I’ve lost a lot of weight this past year. I gained about 15 pounds of it back starting in January because I got my appetite back. Then I started treatments again right after Memorial Day for 6 weeks and lost about half of that. I think that might be one reason on top of quitting coffee that it has gone down.
@cherokeepatti Mine is due to aortic valve regurgitation, my blood leaks back into the chamber, thus raising bp quite significantly.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
I couldn't say for sure. Some people have naturally lower or higher blood pressures then most. I'd trust what your GP says or get a second opinion of another Doctor if your not sure.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Thevy29 I’ve seen a lot of doctors this past year. My blood pressure has gone down a great deal since I stopped drinking coffee. I didn’t want to have to start taking blood pressure medicine daily to bring it down due to possible side effects of the meds.

I'm 70 and get similar numbers to those. I am very inactive and had the same concerns. When I'm at the doctor office my numbers are higher just because of the walking from car to office. I had the same concerns because of my age and condition plus I lost Vickie to heart failure. But she had bad heart conditions occuring. Anyway I learned that the diastolic number is the one to be considered about going much to low because that is apparently when your heart muscle gets it's oxygen. I'm sure there's much more to it but knowing this calmed me down some.

@Gibbon That’s good to know, thank you.

"Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mm Hg). In general, low blood pressure is a reading lower than 90/60 mm Hg."

I think their machine is faulty.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@PhoenixPhail I get it checked on a lot of different machines and it’s been surprisingly low for the past month each time.
FreestyleArt · 36-40, M
I don't know who to blame...the Machine or the Doctor only has one Job from demands.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@FreestyleArt I had readings last year sometimes at about 190/85…they said it was probably White Coat Syndrome and I agreed because it was never that high at home unless my back was out and I had a bad pinched nerve, which happened once about a decade ago. I think coffee is too much of a stimulant for me, I didn’t drink much, about 12 ounces each morning but that’s all it took. And what is weird is that the doctors always recommend cutting back on salt but I have never had a high sodium level with all the lab test they’ve done in the past year, it’s always low.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
Wow, I wish my untreated blood pressure was anywhere near that.

Are you especially fit? Do you take a lot of exercise?
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@ninalanyon I have had serious health issues this past year that I’ve been dealing with. Finished treatment 11 days ago and that has taken a great deal of stress off, feel like doing more things now

I don’t trust those Sam’s/ Walmart BP readers, they always read my pressure way too low like I’m almost dying , then when I go to the doctors they measure with the cuff and it’s just fine.
Atlotto · M
The pharmacy machine is not accurate...If your bp is 82/50, you wouldn't have enough strength to stand.
@Atlotto That's why I advised her to get a personal arm cuff monitor and check three times a day, and to have a local clinic check its accuracy.
Atlotto · M
@NativePortlander1970 Good advice.
@Atlotto I speak from experience

Are you absolutely sure their machine was accurate 🤔🤔

Drinking salt water will raise blood pressure. I heard one doc say this. If you are eating everything sodium free then maybe not enough blood ( liquid) volume is there for heart to pump 🤔🤔🤔cause all the water escapes the body. I know that blood pressure falls do to dehydration ( not enough liquid to pump ). My relative was getting his wisdom teeth pulled out in this operation and they told him not to drink any liquids for 12 or 24 hours I forgot which one exactly. But after that stupid operation he woke up and passed out, they measure his bp it was like 50/25 or something, they quickly gave him an IV ( to increase liquids) and it went up to 90. Are you drinking enough 🤔🤔
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@SW-User I am not trying to avoid salt but do avoid mono sodium glutamate, which contributes- lot of sodium to processed foods. So no canned soups and other foods with it
SW-User
@cherokeepatti ya, canned food is poison. Its the right thing to completely avoid it
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
82/50 is too low. You need to see your doctor about this.
82/50 is definitely low.

I cut out caffeinated coffee about 30 years ago because it was giving me heart palpitations.
That is a bit low, I advise You to get a personal at home arm cuff and monitor, avoid wrist cuffs at all costs, those are notorius for beinf highly inaccurate, I have three of them floating somewhere around my apartment.
@cherokeepatti Ask a local clinic to make sure it's accurate, I think You should take at least three readings a day. Morning after waking up sitting on the side of your bed, about mid afternoon, and before bed, and write the readings down including pulse, and what time of day.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@NativePortlander1970 I go back to one of my doctors on Tuesday and will let them check it for me. Ten days ago was my last day of treatment and my blood pressure was high. They said it happens after treatment, they usually only measured it once a week during treatments. I wasn’t feeling too good that’s for sure.
@cherokeepatti Please still check your pressure until you go to your appointment, show them your daily chart when You go in.
