Anyone With High Blood Pressure?

Do you experience swelling of feet? If so how do you manage the symptoms?
bowman81 · M
I am "borderline hypertensive" (fancy words for high blood pressure) I am prescribed a low dose of generic Norvasq. One of the side effects of the medication is swelling of the feet. In my case there is some minor swelling in the ankle area, usually visible at the top of my socks in the evenings. The swelling is gone when I wake in the morning. It takes all day before the swelling is noticeable.

I spoke to my doctor about it and she didn't believe it was something to be concerned about. I don't do anything differently than normal.

If your swelling is a problem try talking with your doctor about a change in medications. My friend went through 4 or 5 different meds trying to find one that worked at controlling his BP with acceptable side effects.

@bowman81 That's what my quack doctor said, she didn't think it was anything to be concerned about.

When we watch hospital shows on TV like The Good Doctor, they always say they need to run tests. But in real life they just shrug their shoulders and hope the problem goes away on its own.

@bowman81 Perhaps you should try a different medication. I Losartan (generic version of Cozaar) and as far as I can tell there are no side effects beyond my fingers feeling the cold a bit more than before which seems to be simply an effect of reduced blood pressure rather than a side effect.

Watch your weight
Salt intake
Sugar Intake
Exercise
Meds if necessary

Avoiding Alcohol also helps
No Smoking

Occasionally my feet swell, but all the quack doctors just shrug their shoulders and say they don't know why. They say it's simply edema and leave it at that without making an effort to find the cause. I can't even begin to tell you the stories of all the problems I have with doctors in my life.

I don't even have a family doctor at the moment because the last one complained I was 5 minutes late and refused to accept my apology. She also called me a liar when I told her my dermatologist violated HIPAA rules by inviting in an unauthorized person to watch a full body exam.

She wasn't an employee or a nursing student, she was merely a friend of the doctor I found out after the exam.

I told them I need my high blood pressure medication refilled or I could die, and the receptionist said, "Oh well, then you'll die". smh

I have even worse stories of my experiences with the VA health care, or in better words lack thereof. I haven't been to those idiots in over 6 years.

@karysma The only thing I do is try to stay off salty foods and junk food.
Also, it seems when I binge drink tends to cause my feet, ankles, and legs to swell.

I went to a heart doctor. The first doctor was toxic and complained about me being on disability and asked if I was gay. I dropped him immediately and refuse to pay that bill.
I'm not gay btw, but what if I was? What's that got to do with heart problems?

My new heart doctor said I have unrepairable heart damage from a previous heart attack from an unknown date, and that may be the cause. 'May be', but who knows?
I try not to let it bother me.

I wish your stepdad the best and hope he can do better than me finding a qualified and caring physician.

I don't have high blood pressure, but the ex did. He was overweight and frequently lost his temper so that his face would turn purple.

The doctor put him on high blood pressure medication, and advised him not to eat salt in his diet. I bought salt back in those days that contained reduced sodium. He was also told not to drink soda or soft drinks, and was told to lose weight and exercise.

His hands and feet did swell up, but that was a separate disease...and eventually that went into remission.

You should have your blood tested and make sure you are getting enough creatine in your diet.
You can also drink tea or coffee, (without cream and sugar), and cranberry juice, as those will help you to process fluid. Do NOT drink alcohol.

My dad had high blood pressure and I remember one time when we went to a mountainous town his fingers swelled because of the low atmospheric pressure there.

There could be many causes for swollen feet/legs. Better to check with your doctor.

yep, mines tied to injury/physical pain/nerve pain; anytime im in pain, BP goes up; not really anything that can be done about it.
karysma · 31-35, F
@wildbill83 Awww I'm sorry to hear that. What about soaking your feet in hot water with course salt. Do you think it might work?
It happens ..usually hot weather...
Don’t feel any different.
I am on BP medication and sitting with my feet raised helps

i fell and hit my head about 20 years ago. it set off high blood pressure for some reason. i take 2 meds and i don't get swelling.
Step 1 is avoid salty foods.
Others have said so; I'm just underlining their advice.

I have hbp. My feet didn't start swelling until I had the heart attack and quadruple bypass. I take pills for the swelling but they still swell. I also eat blue foods that have an anti inflammatory side effect as well as enabling better control of glucose and reducing LDL. Blue berries, blue corn, blue cheese to name a few.

I have high blood pressure. I take a med for it. I watch my diet, no salt, and i used to get swelling in the heat and such. But, the med has helped me alot. Just go to your family doc and discuss your options .

I have hypertension. I can't say they've ever swelled, but I do take medication for it.
Compression socks work for me. They're pretty affordable, too. You can get them on Amazon.
