Why do many people lie when asked to donate at the checkout line? A guy in front of me today said: "I donated online" 🙄. What do YOU usually say?

Poll - Total Votes: 17
I'm a toxic positive internet do-gooder and my reputation is at stake, so I'll SAY I always donate.
I tell a lie even though I know that everyone knows it's a lie.
I usually donate my change rounded up to the nearest dollar.
If I can't afford to, or don't like the charity, I'm honest and say no.
If I can afford to and I like the worthy cause, I donate.
I donate online.

Yeah, I know IT DEPENDS. Everything depends on something, that's a given. So please don't try to sound deep, complicated, and analytical by saying "it depends".
In general, if you don't wish to donate for whatever reason, do you tell a fib or are you honest and simply say something like "no, not today? Why lie?

I usually say "no not this time". But most times they don't ask, the card reader does and I verbally say nothing.

Lol @ the top choice.

@LeopoldBloom no it describes every democrat
@NoThanksLeon @Prison1203 Fine. It goes both ways. Democrats want a theocracy and Republicans hate America.

I usually say something like "no, not at this time...thanks".

As others have already speculated, I figure those who lie do so because they feel some kind of guilt, for saying "no".
Piper · 61-69, F
@NativePortlander1970 Most of the donation requests at the stores around here, are for well-established and known 'non-profit' entities. I wouldn't consider them "scams", really, but I am aware that for many of them...not as much of what people donate goes to the cause, as 'we' think should.
ffony · M
@NoThanksLeon I should have mentioned; I made the checks out to the organizations by name and endorsed them 'A/C payee' so they could not be cashed by an individual.
@ffony Well aren't you special 😝
I don’t feel the need to make an excuse. I just decline politely. Who cares what the cashier thinks.

I don't trust where my money is going in most of those "round up" donate at the register situations.

My state has held an annual day of giving for the last 15 years and when you donate through the website there's a chance your donation could be matched by grants. I consider it my giving holiday and all of the organizations that are most important to me [the rescues my pets came from and my kid's charter school] are participants in the giving day so I use that day as my prompt and opportunity to give to all of them.
calicuz · 56-60, M
I just say: "No, not today."

I don't feel the need to lie about charity.
@calicuz if they press me on it I usually go off but nobody ever does and thats good for them and me

Cashier: Would you like to donate $0.14 to help children dying of cancer?
Me: No.
"No, thank you" is what i say. Sometimes i round up but usually i prefer to donate online so i know the organization better

I used to work in service and people say a lot of things instead of no all the time. Like on our first day of asking for donations they says "i did yesterday". They'll say they donate online or they did already. Regardless of how true it is, they feel bad for not wanting to donate or not being able to afford to and they justify it. I feel guilty for saying no too. But i hate talking to people so i don't want to share any extra or irrelevant info lol
@TeamSkullGrunt This guy in front of me just happened to donate online to the very same charity that the cashier mentioned. lol
DrWatson · 70-79, M
If I don't want to donate, I just say "no thanks."
Most "donations", regardless of cause, end up lining someone's pockets. I have no problem and feel no shame for refusing any request for money that is over and above the cost of the service or item that I'm purchasing.
@UnderLockDown Exactly, the Walmart cashier had a shocked look last night when I told her that I refuse to give ro organizations where the CEO takes 50%
@NativePortlander1970 I'm surprised that more people don't realize where most of the money actually goes.
@UnderLockDown Because of social pressure, plus most organizations are not required to disclose what happens to the money once they get it.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
Nobody gets a tax receipt when the donate at the checkout. Not the customer nor the retailer. The money is just funnelled through to the charity. That’s why I don’t donate at the checkout.

I just tell the cashier “no thank you”
Poppies · 61-69, F
I usually say no, without explanation. Sometimes I say yes without explanation. The point is, I never explain. Either the cashier doesn't care, or if they do care, it's none of their business
ffony · M
Slightly off-topic, but I made year-end donations by checks mailed direct to the charities I wanted to support; hoping this would bypass the funding outfits that all take their cut; and with any luck keeping me off those mailing lists. It mostly worked. All organizations sent me tax receipts (address is on my checks) and only one - or its funding agency - has been pestering me for more. They're getting a protests letter in the mail telling them(among other things) that I want them to stop.

I only donate to St. Judes Hospital as this was something my dad supported every month and if it isn't that then 9 times out of 10 ...i respond with a "no thank ya "
Ontheroad · M
Mostly I run into the "round up" donation thing at the register and invariably, I say yes. Sometimes it's a dollar or two of St Jude or some other worthwhile organization and I always say yes to those.

My outlook on this is what happens to the money I donate isn't on me, it's on them. I walk away feeling I did my part, and that's what I care about.

I round up my total.

But I can also understand why people might lie. They are put on the spot during checkout and they might not have the capacity to spend extra, or maybe they just don't want to. And it's okay, it's their money.
SW-User
@NoThanksLeon None. But, not everyone has the same code of conduct. To some, their inability to spend is something to feel shame around, so they mask it. It's always way complex than black or white.
@SW-User I contend that everyone knows they are lying. Like the guy in front of me today "donated online" to the very same charity that the cashier mentioned. lol

I do get what you say. 😉
SW-User
@NoThanksLeon Sure, that is how our energy works though. Everyone sees in us what we cannot, until we become aware and conscious.
MarineBob · 61-69, M
I donate to only worthy local causes
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
There are also those annoying people pushing solar panels which if engaged by them I say, “ I don’t fund the CCP.”
you know what is really absurd? when I was in the army our company commander basically told us if we didnt donate to a charity we would have to do extra work detail and meanwhile at the same time charity is being made for soldiers

its a real scandal and nobody ever talks about it

its because the company commander got brownie points for being the highest donating unit
Umile · 41-45, F
If I got it, I'll give it.

If I don't, then next time.

Doesn't need to be public.
@Umile "Public". Hmmmm, good point.
Umile · 41-45, F
@NoThanksLeon Too many do it for show. Should be from the heart. Alms. Somewhere in the bible.
I donated the last 6 times..
Enoughs enough…
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout So what did you say the 7th time? That's what I'm asking. I would say "no, not today."
@NoThanksLeon the above 👆.

They seem to ask everyday around here..
no matter where you go..

McDonald’s drive thru: thatl be 15$.. would you like to make a donation today?
Me: again? That’s every day this week! Nah I’m good thanks
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
I’ll never give to anything which is connected to those stores. Most of that money if not all of it goes to leftist causes. I do not fund my own destruction.

ffony · M
@therighttothink50 Read your Edison quote again, and try to get the message.
Lostpoet · M
I usually donate to the dollar, one time it was one penny, and I felt more dirty donating than if I didn't donate anything.
I give where I know there is a real need personally!
I just say no. That's tip money for my bartender(s).
mooncrest02 · 31-35, F
I never donate in or through a store at all. I just say no thank you. Lol
SW-User
@mooncrest02 it just becomes a tax write off for them
mooncrest02 · 31-35, F
@SW-User yea exactly! Lol
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
why don't YOU donate to ME?
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
@Adrift you make a solid point... try it out
Adrift · 61-69, F
@StygianKohlrabi I think I will do that especially at the vet.
@Adrift I remember at the animal shelter where I used to live, they refused pet food and such. Said they had too much. They encouraged cash donations instead.
Adrift · 61-69, F
I just say no.
SW-User
I just say no lol
When asked, I always donate my change rounded up to the nearest dollar. I don't have an issue with that , and I think it's a good idea.
DDonde · 31-35, M
I only get prompted as part of the checkout machine. If it's close, I'll round up. Most of the time I just ignore it. If someone asks me in the drivethru or something I'll just say no thanks.
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
only if you sign this form promising not to get a tax write off for my donation
