Why do many people lie when asked to donate at the checkout line? A guy in front of me today said: "I donated online" 🙄. What do YOU usually say?

I'm a toxic positive internet do-gooder and my reputation is at stake, so I'll SAY I always donate.
I tell a lie even though I know that everyone knows it's a lie.

If I can afford to and I like the worthy cause, I donate.

Yeah, I know IT DEPENDS. Everything depends on something, that's a given. So please don't try to sound deep, complicated, and analytical by saying "it depends".
In general, if you don't wish to donate for whatever reason, do you tell a fib or are you honest and simply say something like "no, not today? Why lie?

why don't YOU donate to ME?

@StygianKohlrabi Every time I go to buy pet food, the clerks always ask me if I want to donate to help homeless animals. I often want to ask them if they would like to give me a percentage off of the price to help me feed the ones that I have already adopted.

@Adrift you make a solid point... try it out

@StygianKohlrabi I think I will do that especially at the vet.
@Adrift I remember at the animal shelter where I used to live, they refused pet food and such. Said they had too much. They encouraged cash donations instead.
