Why do many people lie when asked to donate at the checkout line? A guy in front of me today said: "I donated online" 🙄. What do YOU usually say?

I'm a toxic positive internet do-gooder and my reputation is at stake, so I'll SAY I always donate.
I tell a lie even though I know that everyone knows it's a lie.
I usually donate my change rounded up to the nearest dollar.
If I can't afford to, or don't like the charity, I'm honest and say no.
If I can afford to and I like the worthy cause, I donate.
I donate online.

Yeah, I know IT DEPENDS. Everything depends on something, that's a given. So please don't try to sound deep, complicated, and analytical by saying "it depends".
In general, if you don't wish to donate for whatever reason, do you tell a fib or are you honest and simply say something like "no, not today? Why lie?

I round up my total.

But I can also understand why people might lie. They are put on the spot during checkout and they might not have the capacity to spend extra, or maybe they just don't want to. And it's okay, it's their money.
@SW-User So do I.

Yes, but what honor is there in being a liar on top of being a cheapskate? 😂 (That was kind of a joke to illustrate a point.)

@NoThanksLeon None. But, not everyone has the same code of conduct. To some, their inability to spend is something to feel shame around, so they mask it. It's always way complex than black or white.
@SW-User I contend that everyone knows they are lying. Like the guy in front of me today "donated online" to the very same charity that the cashier mentioned. lol

I do get what you say. 😉

@NoThanksLeon Sure, that is how our energy works though. Everyone sees in us what we cannot, until we become aware and conscious.
