Why do many people lie when asked to donate at the checkout line? A guy in front of me today said: "I donated online" 🙄. What do YOU usually say?

I'm a toxic positive internet do-gooder and my reputation is at stake, so I'll SAY I always donate.
I tell a lie even though I know that everyone knows it's a lie.
I usually donate my change rounded up to the nearest dollar.
If I can't afford to, or don't like the charity, I'm honest and say no.
If I can afford to and I like the worthy cause, I donate.
I donate online.

Yeah, I know IT DEPENDS. Everything depends on something, that's a given. So please don't try to sound deep, complicated, and analytical by saying "it depends".
In general, if you don't wish to donate for whatever reason, do you tell a fib or are you honest and simply say something like "no, not today? Why lie?

I usually say something like "no, not at this time...thanks".

As others have already speculated, I figure those who lie do so because they feel some kind of guilt, for saying "no".
@Piper I never feel guilt because of how too many "charities" are nothing more than money making scams.
@NativePortlander1970 The problem is that "non-profit" is deceiving. Many people don't realize that non-profit means profit over and above all expenses. Most of these charities have administrators that make well over $100K a year with expense allowances. That money comes from donations. The "needy" get what's left over.

That being said, I always donate at least my change rounded to the nearest dollar when asked.
@NoThanksLeon Exactly, "administrative costs and fees" first.

@ffony Of course! I'm online. When in Rome ...

No. I just think it's a great idea.

@unsociableAnthony Friends of yours then?

@NativePortlander1970 Most of the donation requests at the stores around here, are for well-established and known 'non-profit' entities. I wouldn't consider them "scams", really, but I am aware that for many of them...not as much of what people donate goes to the cause, as 'we' think should.

@NoThanksLeon I should have mentioned; I made the checks out to the organizations by name and endorsed them 'A/C payee' so they could not be cashed by an individual.
