Do people chat/ use inbox on here?

Yes, but many of us do not see the site as being primarily a "chat room." We spend most of our time with the public posts and comments, and sometimes private conversations spring up from those interactions.

A post like, "Hi! Anyone wanna chat?" will usually be met with derision.

Yes some do some don’t. It’s nice to make friends and have regular conversations, but not everyone like to reciprocate. Times are different these days.

I'm sure the popular people do. I don't so much unless someone starts a conversation with me. But I also tend not to reply to people I haven't had any public exchanges with in posts like these. Unless they put something substantial in the post. "Hey, how are you?" as a dead opener from a complete stranger isn't likely to get a reply.

Yes I use it but only with a select few

I have sent messages to people and had no replies, but sometimes you find a chatter and its fun for a bit.
