Is Wearing A Watch Now A Status Symbol?

I rarely wear a watch anymore my phone tells me the time, have a watch my wife bought me that I wear on special occasions. It seems now days if it isnt an Apple watch ( not for telling time ) its a very expensive watch. I have a friend who showed me his new Tag Heuer watch was excited wanted one but was very expensive when they took 10% off he got one now he likes showing it off not telling time.

No, of course not.

Except perhaps to "fashion victims" for whom ostentatiously wearing a very expensive one as a "status symbol" as daft as driving one of those massive half-cab pick-ups when you are neither a builder nor farmer. In other words... vanity!

Otherwise an ordinary wrist-watch is simple practicality.

It's instant to read, discreet and ready for use when you are in some situation where using a portable telephone would be impracticable, bad manners or banned.

@JimboSaturn My watch is hardly an expensive one either!

The situations I had in mind where the 'phone should be switched off include some work places, religious services, cultural events, driving any vehicle (using the phone when driving is illegal in many countries), and simple social gatherings with friends or relations.

@ArishMell Yes it looks rude pulling out your phone like you are uninterested in the conversation. A quick peek at your watch can go more unoticed.

@JimboSaturn Exactly - I'd go further and say "is rude".

I don't own a cellphone or wristwatch.

I tell time by looking at the sky. Day or night I can tell what time it is.

But I am thinking about going and getting another cheap $20 dollar Timex their good and last a long time

In my case, it is a symbol of an old guy who has always worn a watch and is not about to change his ways.

@exexec Good for you! I like your independence of thought!

I wear watches as fashion accessories only. I don't use them for their intended purpose. Lol

Seems like they are making a comeback in some circles. I don’t care to wear one since I have a cell phone and can check the time that way. For those who don’t want to pull out a phone to constantly check the time (or have jobs where phone use is prohibited while on the clock) it is a good option.

My watch needs a new battery. It's needed one for months. I never know when I'm going to pass by a shop that can replace it. I have a clock in my van andon my phone and pretty much every where I go is a clock so I don't miss it.

If I do ever get around to getting it sorted, I probably will start wearing it again. Although, in the summer, the bracelet cuts into my wrist, so I take it off anyway.

Pocket watches are more classy.

There are a few brands that are quite expensive (Tag Heuer being one), but not all wrist watches are that pricey. I wear a (cheap) watch out of convenience, it's easier to glance at your wrist than to get your phone out of your pocket, if you want to know what time it is...

It's only a status symbol if you are surrounded by people for whom such things matter. And then there will always be someone who can raise the stakes by wearing a more expensive one.
I stopped wearing a watch because I noticed I was getting a rash where the bracelet fitted. Looking at a phone display isn't ideal, I know.

When you think about it, thanks to cell phones, we've entered a new age of the pocket watch.

But yeah. Wristwatches are pretty much status symbols at this point. You won't catch me wearing one, because the band gives me a sweat rash.
