The only good thing was that when we had those phones, phone numbers only had seven digits usually. Most of the time in our town, phone numbers were four or five digits. Mine was 7864 and my girlfriend's was 8-8193.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@exexec we had the whole number ,but we didn't have to dial 1 nor area code for a local call and you could call the operator for long distance , still

Now, my parents were immigrants from a small isolated Greek island.
As a child, I spent a lot of my summer months there. Boring, quiet, beautiful…all the things that I look for now…but, hated back then.
Anyhow, my grandfather had the only phone in the village….and anyone who wanted to make a call would come over.
His phone was so old…you had to crank it to work it, and speak into some kind of microphone while holding up an ear piece.
Granted, everything on the island was older technology…but, I was always fascinated by his phone. Meanwhile, back in the states I was privy to touch phones…and everyone had them.

@Ferric67 Interesting

@Ferric67 That’s so wild. My father’s family had the first telephone in their ward (neighborhood). My grandfather used to charge neighbors to use it.
NCCindy · 36-40, F
I got to play with one of those at my grandma's house
It wasn't connected to a phone line

@NCCindy yep ,by the time my kids came along all push button phones.
I think it actually started changing over when I was a teenager, but as a young kid we had the rotaries

@Justmeraeagain remember the rotary well, then the corded push button and eventually the cordless with the pullout antenna!!!!

Thanks for considering me beautiful
hunkalove · 70-79, M
I had nightmares for years that the monsters were chasing me and I just couldn't dial the phone correctly, quite often on that last digit.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@hunkalove I use to dream I was back at middle school and no one would give me my schedule
hunkalove · 70-79, M
@Justmeraeagain My worst school dream, for years, was that even though I was a college grad for some reason I had to do my senior year of high school again. Eventually I realized I'd never had a good job so why care about high school?
anoderod55 · 70-79, M
Or not realizing you had messed up and getting a wrong number/person .👻
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@anoderod55
Probably happened a lot.
I remember in the 90s when we had the home phone you could program "top numbers" so you just had to touch one button and it would dial the call- I thought those were the coolest thing... at the time

Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@FreeSpirit1 My Aunt had hers a long time as well
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Having numbers with zeros in it took forever to dial.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Degbeme yep
Nimbus · M
True but at least I did not have to charge it up every single day! ;)
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Nimbus That's true
BrandNewMan · M
Yup .. and getting up to change TV channels, rolling down a car window ..
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F

Pretzel · 70-79, M
@Justmeraeagain ahh I was in 3rd grade - it was scary for a kid to know that somebody as important as the president could be killed.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Pretzel I bet it was and now it's scary that it doesn't seem that implausible
BillyMack · 46-50, M
Especially if there was a lot of 7s or higher in the number.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@BillyMack we had a thing ,when I was a kid, the library had a program called" dial a story"... I was always having to ring that one at least twice😵💫
shinyplasticlove · 51-55, M
At least with these you could slam it down when hanging up.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@shinyplasticlove Satisfying 😁
Musicman · 61-69, M
Been there done that one! Lol!!! 😂😂😂
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@Musicman Sinking feeling when your finger slipped and it didn't make it all the way around 😭
Musicman · 61-69, M
@Justmeraeagain And forget about winning a contest on the radio when other people had touch tone phones. ☹
smiler2012 · 61-69
[@justmeraeagain ] 🤔suppose it the same with any phone if you make a cock up dialling the numbers you need to start again
Sequoia51 · 70-79, M
Yep
