Ice Tea - how do you make it?

I'm trying to make epic ice tea at home, make it by the gallon. So far I've gotten to the "it's okay" stage, but not the epic stage.

Any secrets you are willing to share?

BTW, I'm using the cold brew method.

1 Lipton family size tea bag and 1 regular mint tea bag

@exexec Seems that Lipton bags are what most are saying - I think I'll try using it rather than the organic loose leaf stuff.

I use Lipton's tea. Watch how long you steep it or it gets bitter. I think real lemon juice is better than the stuff in the bottle. Sugar syrup on the side that you add to taste seems to be a good way to serve it.
@Tastyfrzz I grew up on Lipton’s. The only brand my family uses.

@Tastyfrzz Ha! Another for Lipton's! Thanks!

I never made cold brew method,i think i used to boil a gallon of water, add 10 tea bags and let it cool down then add sugar to taste for sweet tea. :)

@Ramrod We used to do that for years.
Ontheroad · M
@Ramrod Yep, seems you too use tea bags. Thanks, I'm going to get tea bags instead of using loose leaf.

5 cold brew tea bags 1.5 cups of sugar 1/2 bottle of squeeze lemon juice. i put sugar in the water first stir real good then tea bags for about an hour lemon to taste

@MarineBob And I guessing you mean Lipton's as the others have said. Thanks!
Do you mean sun tea? Just add tea bags to cold water and leave in the sun for hours? I have done this in the past.
Ontheroad · M
@PoetryNEmotion No, refrigerator (cold) brewed and while the difference is slight, I've noticed a smoother taste with cold brewed. I'm wondering now if it's the tea I use. Most are saying they use Liptons tea bags and I've been using an organic loose leaf orange pekoe black tea. Maybe I need to use the cheap stuff 😁.
@Ontheroad Ooh, I love loose leaf tea. I think it may be too strong for ice tea though. Have you tried using less or steeping less time? I am not a fan of Lipton. So you make yours in the fridge?

Boil tea leaves in water, add sugar and lemon juice. Strain and put it in the freezer. Add mint leaves to garnish, along with a lemon or orange slice.

Used to have friends who would fill a gallon container with ice and then poor the hot tea in and drink it just like that. It wasn't half bad tea.

My cousin's husband used to make iced tea using several tea bags such as Lipton and add some powdered orange juice along with some lemon and orange slices.

I'd never heard of the cold brew method so I googled and think I'll try it! 👏😋
Ontheroad · M
@Fluffybull I've found it to be quite good - something about how long it takes to steep well eliminates and chance of bitterness. I think I notice the bitterness more because I drink it without any additives including sugar, just the tea.

I'm curious to try dry curry leaves. They have a similar flavor.
I sometimes make sun tea, like my grandmother in New Orleans used to. I can’t load it up with sugar like she did, which is a pity, but I use stevia, and that works. I let it steep for a long time outside. Then I bring the jar inside, put it in the fridge or if I want a glass right away I pour one and add ice.

@bijouxbroussard Thank you - Sun tea is what I used to make, but am trying to perfect cold (refrigerator) brewed. A couple of hours slower to brew, but seems to me to taste less bitter.

@bijouxbroussard I make iced tea the same way. I make sun tea like my mom and grandmother used to make (using loose leaf tea and I put one crushed stevia leaf in during the process instead of sugar (I grow a stevia plant). And then after the sun tea is done I filter if needed and put it in the fridge. :) It's so good.
brew tea with hot water, add dried jasmine flower for aroma enhancer, you can add sugar if you want. Wait until cool down completely, last.. add ice

Unfortunately I've never tried a cold brew tea method beyond sticking a few mint leaves in my water bottle full of cold water when I go for a walk. Good luck!

@MarmeeMarch Ha! Keeping it simple, I like that.
