Do you tip when you get your carryout food from a restaurant?

🤔 Whenever I dine in, I tip but I am on the fence about tipping when you get your carryout food.

No because tipping is for the service that you received while you're at the table and if I have to pour my own drinks and provide my own plates and attend to myself why would I tip them
@KingofBones1 👆👆👆
Tipping is for the quality of service one gets while dining. Tipping is NOT for the food........it's 100% for service. If that "service" is handing me my food over a counter..........no I do not tip.
@anythingoes477 Don't get takeout from Waffle House.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
Only if the person was truly accommodating and caring i will tip takeout...typically I don't. I do tip 20 % or bit more in dine in.
@Coralmist I need to be your waiter!
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
Not if I’m picking it up. Only if it’s being delivered
JustNik · 51-55, F
I do. I mostly carry out from local places with great people, and I appreciate how awesome their attitudes are doing a job that I would absolutely hate. 😂
Only if it's delivered to my house
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@FreeSpirit1 Exactly. Delivery yes...but just cant wrap my head around a tip for them putting my meal in a bag lol. (Takeout)
BlueRain · 51-55, F
I do not tip when picking up my food.

Tipping is arbitrary and antiquated but it's good for the soul. You should do it when the opportunity presents itself.
Sapio · 51-55, M
If it's delivered, I will but I usually don't when I pick up take out. And if I do, I'll usually leave 10%.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
As a general rule I don't tip if I order and receive my food while on my feet.
TrunkZ · 56-60, M
Generally not if I'm picking up carryout from a restaurant.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
Depends on the place and the service that I receive from the cashier. It's never more than $2.

There's a place that I go to nearby. Every time I go, I am greeted and treated well. The associates are never standing around on their phones or chatting instead of helping customers.
I can see the cooks in the back washing hands and cooking food properly. That place, can get a tip.
nudistsueaz · 61-69, F
I never have
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
I agree with you and your opinion, and the only time I tip on carry out is if the person waiting on me impresses me with their service and attitude.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@WillaKissing Exactly
ArishMell · 70-79, M
No, only for food I eat in the restaurant.

I don't tip in take-away food shops either, but might put something in whatever charity collection-box they have.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
I do. Though it’s a strange change, usually the staff is young. They need a little fun money. Plus, it does prove that working hard pays off.
akindheart · 61-69, F
you know...that is a real problem for me. I do tip but honestly don't think it is fair except the cashier etc might not get part of the tips the waiters get.
itsok · 31-35, F
I’m frustrated about it, but I usually do 10% on takeout, and 20-25% on dine in
SmileSunshine · 31-35, F
I do, however I tip more when I’m dining in depending on the service.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
Yes if its a waiter/waitress establishment
BlueRain · 51-55, F
They have to earn it no matter what they make.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I all was tip
Beautywithin · 36-40, F
Hell No! Money is tight as it is normally something from my order is always missing.
BlueRain · 51-55, F
I did before they started delivery charges. I now get my food. It’s cheaper.
sometimes.
... ok, often.
The food industry is hard work for shitty pay, usually.
If the teenage girl stares daggers through me though..... I don't tip well.
seriously, I have issues.
I tipped a waitress after she dumped a glass of water in my lap and said " oops" and walked off....

I grew up in the restaurant industry in a way. I have a difficult time not tipping.
People need to live and restaurant wages are rarely enough.
caccoon · 36-40
I do, but I tip on the lower end on take out.

These people take a lot of shit from customers and I want to appreciate them in some small way
Why would you be on the fence about it?

If food is carried to your table during a dine-in experience and you tip for it, why would you not tip if your food was carried from the kitchen to the take-away window where you carry it away with you?
@th3r0n
10% average? That means, sometimes you tip less than 10%. It's always better to leave NO tip than to tip less than 10%.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
@swirlie I could be guessing wrong

I usually leave $2 and my meals are usually $9-$20

For better service or if I have a little more money it's usually 3 or more
@th3r0n
Well, $2 is certainly respectable for what you're talking about here, so I don't think $2 is something to complain about either.
tenente · 36-40, M
no i don't tip for carry out. I do tip for dinning in if the service is acceptable.
Carryout, no, casual dining where I'm served, yes.
