I just returned from Scotland and I found it very expensive — is that just me?

Fairydust · F
[image deleted]I took my kids out for a birthday treat.
helenS · 36-40, F
@WelshLovely Aah – got it! Thank you 🌷
Fairydust · F
@helenS
It was an offer if you buy two.
Goodluckwiththat · 56-60, M
@Fairydust chicken waffles and margaritas!! Damn!! Love it!!
RubySoo · 56-60, F
I was in the Temple bar last Tuesday.
A pint of larger and a malibu and coke was €24!!
Normally, i'd pay less than £10 for both drinks locally.
Fairydust · F
@RubySoo
it’s very expensive there, I was there a few years ago and couldn’t believe the prices 👀
OldBrit · 61-69, M
Jeez. I used to drink 15 or so pints of Guinness a day that's what £115

Bloody hell I'd be bankrupt in days.

So glad I'm sober 😂😂
helenS · 36-40, F
@OldBrit Yes but go and have a cup of coffee (see my reply) 😐
meggie · F
@OldBrit i think some people still do in Wetherspoons
helenS · 36-40, F
I was in Germany, Switzerland and France for two weeks (vacations). Prices are going through the roof everywhere. Even in France. In Paris I ordered a beer at a simple couscous restaurant near Pt de Clignancourt (in the north, where it's cheaper than downtown) and it cost EUR 10! (= $10 for a beer!!)
In Geneva I was at a street café and I drank two or three cups of coffee while enjoying the view on Lake Geneva (just black coffee, nothing fancy), and I was billed almost EUR 30 😕
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@helenS So I bought two lattes and two bits of brownie in our local bakers/cafe this morning £9. I'll not complain about UK prices. Ok so the outlook was a dull 1970s shopping centre not Lake Geneva with the fountain but...
helenS · 36-40, F
@OldBrit GBP 9 is a reasonable price I'd say.
Yes the Lake Geneva fountain was fun but it did not improve the taste of my coffee in any way.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@helenS £9 is good around here but that's a cheap cafe - normally I'd expect £14 - 15 for that I suppose.
JustJordan · 22-25, F
I've been to temple bar in ireland. It's a tourist trap drinks were more reasonable away from the city centre
Fairydust · F
@JustJordan it’s so expensive there.
JustJordan · 22-25, F
@Fairydust it's the same back home though if you get away from the city centre it becomes a lot more reasonable
Synyster · 51-55, M
It's now $10 for beer, not even premium, and $12-$14 for cocktails. I can buy a bottle of Jack Daniel's for the price of 2 drinks. Way overpriced and not worth the money.
Synyster · 51-55, M
@helenS Yeah, I know, it's quite sad.

@meggie
Yup, that’s very true.

Between 4 and 5 £'s. 😯

Years ago, when I used to dine out frequently, I thought the cost of drinks in restaurants was crazy and wondered how people could afford to go to bars or order drinks at dinner as a regular thing. When I took Mum out for lunch last year, I noticed a beer or ale was $10, cocktails were $15. Fortunately, Mum was a non drinker, and I'm just as happy with tea or coffee.
TAReturns · M
One of many reasons I prefer Pepsi.
For that much I drink for atleast a month or straight 20 days. Cost of pint of beer(500ml) here is $1 and apple vodka pint(180ml) would be around $1.3 so I drink around (270ml) for less then $3. So overall what you had is my budget for alone for a month. But I have been sober since three weeks. 🙂
SW-User
I just did some very rough sums.

When I first started drinking in pubs in 1980, the average UK wage was 250 pints/week

In 2023, it is 135 pints/week
meggie · F
@SW-User how interesting. Nearly everytime they put taxes up it is on alcohol.
Fluffybull · F
We only have coffees or soft drinks when we go to the pub but here are a few prices after recent rises due to cost of living.

@Fluffybull I have had Budweiser for $4.23 in some other cities in decent place. But where I live and when i started drinking beer I used have a bottle of Budweiser (650ml) for less then a dollar. 😵‍💫
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
Depends on the drink and brand obviously.
Pint of Guinness seems to be running +/- $7
Bud Lite +/- $3
Margarita seems to be +/- $11
Shot of Johnny Walker Blue +/- $40
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
It’s been 3.5 years since I bought a drink at a bar. I spend $100-150 a month at the local liquor store and that covers our drinks and the guests we entertain
InquisitiveMind · 46-50, M
Where I live a beer is at least £6 a pint and that’s not even a big city or a posh pub… it’s just standard pub in a provincial town in the Midlands - crazy!
ArtieKat · M
Bloody hell! I drank in there about 20 years ago....
ArtieKat · M
@meggie The "Bloody hell" was about the price - it was expensive but not extortionate when I was there
meggie · F
@ArtieKat I'm sitting in Wetherspoons Henley on Thames and had a burger, fries and a pint for under a tenner.
ArtieKat · M
@meggie Always good value!
Midlifemale · 61-69, M
That's ridiculously expensive. But that's Ireland.
Here in the USA $10.00 is about whst I pay for a cocktail
Celt43 · 46-50, M
i live an hour outside Dublin, a pint of Heineken in my local is 5.50 and Guinness is 5 euro.
Wow. The price for a pint of something like Guinness or a craft beer is usually around $5 USD at a pub I frequent. A domestic is around $3.50 USD. A double tall mixer would be around $7 USD.

The fine print on the bottom might explain the higher cost, in addition to it being something touristy. I doubt your average corner pub in Ireland can charge those prices.
InstructHer · 56-60, M
I have drunk there several times but I would not pay those prices.
RileyLandS · 41-45, M
$0
I rarely drink and I never go to bars
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
About the same here about $15 Canadian for a pint of Guiness.
helenS · 36-40, F
@JimboSaturn England and Wales have lost more than 7,000 pubs in the past decade 😐
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@helenS That sucks. Maybe young people prefer bars and clubs?
helenS · 36-40, F
@JimboSaturn I think national Covid lockdowns and soaring business costs have ravaged the entire hospitaly industry. And yes, the young may see pubs as a bit old-fashioned, or outdated, a granddad thing.
$8 for a schooner of XXXX
Elessar · 26-30, M
Damn, I used to complain about the €4.50 for a spritz! 😅

Half a liter of beer (a bit less than a pint) is usually no more than €7 down here thus far
WelshLovely · 46-50, F
@Elessar A pint is 568ml so slightly more than half a litre...that number is annoyingly welded on my brain because I was a barmaid in the 90's when they brought in new regulations in the UK 😂
Elessar · 26-30, M
@WelshLovely My bad, I'll correct
Dino11 · M
I drink at home.
4meAndyou · F
Glad I don't drink anymore. I was having sticker shock when I lived in Michigan about 13 years ago, and a glass of wine cost $9.00!!!!
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
Zero, they serve me ice water and never charge. If I’m there however I do give each bartender a CD 💿 .
SW-User
A pint of Guiness would be about £4.50.
The price in the picture would be about £7.50
Is it at an airport?
JustJordan · 22-25, F
@SStarfish no it's a pub in dublin
Good grief ! My best friend and I were complaining about these prices just last week.
Holy shit !
$27 for a vodka and tonic 👀
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@OogieBoogie for 2 of them

Still nuts, pissing your money away

I don’t go to bars anymore so I have no clue how much that would cost here
@WaryWitchWandering ah, I missed that .
Still....not cheap .

I dunno either . Dining out os expensive enough .
Donotfolowme · 51-55, F
Why do they print the amount 3 times on 1 receipt, are the people thick headed over there? 🤣

In fact name of the bar as well.. 🤭
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Donotfolowme
Because people don't believe the price when they see it. So they have to keep repeating it so they will believe it.
Donotfolowme · 51-55, F
@HoraceGreenley yup!! Something like that
a few conversions at current exchange rates

1 pint Guiness = 8.95 EUR / 9.67 USD / 7.68 GBP / 15.06 AUD / 16.38 NZD
1 vodka & tonic = 13.50 EUR / 14.59 USD / 11.59 GBP / 22.72 AUD / 24.72 NZD
1 Jameson & ginger = 13.50 EUR / 14.59 USD / 11.59 GBP / 22.72 AUD / 24.72 NZD
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
Wow that’s a lot of money. I don’t go to bars anymore or drink. But I think a drink is around $12 Canadian going by what they charge at restaurant/bars.
HotPizza71 · 51-55, M
