Ever have Soup Explode in the Microwave?

I was heating up a bowl of clam chowder in the micro, covered with a paper plate, like I've done more times than I can count. Suddenly it goes *POOF* popping off the plate and spewing clam chowder all over the inside of the microwave. After cleaning up the mess I heated what was left in a kettle on the stove. WTF?

I saw a woman hear an egg in in a microwave at a motel (free breakfast). She took a bite and it exploded in her mouth. Hot egg burnt her pretty bad. I am reminded of that everytime I use the microwave and hear that ‘pop’
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
@Wol62 yeah! I remember that feeling. Playing with a blister on the roof of my mouth for a couple days after lol
@LunarOrbit That's awful.
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@LunarOrbit ooooph 😔
I microwaved a small amount of peanut butter for a few seconds and it caught on fire.
@BrewCityBarfly Less than one second.
@WonderGirl I probably wouldn't eat any more of that peanut butter...
Doomflower · 41-45, M
@WonderGirl why would you do that?
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
Remember what a microwave does.... It imparts energy into water molecules in food to 'heat' it. It's not *actually* heating the food like with normal cooking. So anywhere that water is trapped (like in bits of fat or other things) the water turns to steam and explodes because steam takes up approx 1700 times the volume of liquid water.
@zonavar68 Very true. My prior thought was that things already cooked would not have the kind of trapped moisture to cause this kind of "explosion". I stand corrected.

@BrewCityBarfly My middle older child once tried to cook an egg in a microwave. Very life-ending for the microwave when the contents of the egg attempt to turn to steam at high pressure. ;-)
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
Generally lower heat settings for longer periods of time prevent super heating in localized areas causing the "explosion" you describe.. Soups with variable weight materials in them - non homogenous are the most susceptible to super heating...
@pdqsailor1 I was under the impression micros don't have a heat setting. When you go from, let's say power level 10 to power level 5, all it does is have the microwaves going half the time as on full. Thus if you set it for 60 seconds full power, it would be on constantly for the 60 seconds. Power level 5 is something like 10 seconds on, off 10 seconds, on 10 seconds, etc.

Not saying it can't prevent the situation as described by letting a hot spot "readjust" during the off period.
pdqsailor1 · 61-69, M
@BrewCityBarfly Yes it is a period of pulse thing and yes shorter pulses less frequently reduce the super heating phenomiina it is the same control system used for induction cook tops - period and duration.
Yeah…my son loved clam chowder, and this has happened a few times. It’s the clams…

Best reheat it with a lid or on stove.
Wol62 · 51-55, M
@Vivaci When I was younger that happened to me, the soup exploded all over the microwave, I stopped it. I opened it and the soup went pop all over me too!
@Vivaci I was wondering if it could be the clams. It was surprising, I know I've heated clam chowder in the micro before. This was a new brand tho.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Once in a great while, and not just soup. When a pocket of water or whatever inside the food steams and expands -- POP!!!
MartinII · 70-79, M
I recommend not using a microwave!
Not soup but a mug of hot water. It emptied the cup after lifting it in the microwave, with a loud bang. I thought the porcelain exploded.

ALWAYS use a kettle, or heat your liquids in stages with pauses between.
HollyW · 18-21, F
You have to stir thick things halfway through the cycle.
@HollyW I actually did. I always heat up in increments so things are heated uniform. It was my second cycle when it went nuclear.
HollyW · 18-21, F
@BrewCityBarfly Use an overturned plate instead of paper.
@HollyW I think if I heat up soup in the micro again, will use one of my micro bowls with the vapor hole. Also need a vented plate cover, not sure what happened to mine.
Astonishingly, no. But I don't like clam chowder.

Maybe it's the Crustacean's Revenge.
Yep. Not fun. Seems kind of random when it happens too.
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I hate cleaning up messes when I just wanted a quick meal.
CBarson · 51-55
I would suspect a prankster spirit
@CBarson If it happens again, I'm doing an exorcism.
CBarson · 51-55
@BrewCityBarfly please don't be so hasty; pranking is just in their nature, they mean no real harm. I had one that bothered me for about two years and I got so fed up that I threatened to banish it! But I'm glad it never came to that because it is now one of my most loyal companion spirits
@CBarson You might be right, I've also heard stories of unusual things happening after someone passes or recently departs.
Mathers · 61-69
Yes! Put a lid on but not tight
@Mathers I have microwave bowls that have lids with vents, likely will use that going forward or simply back to the tried and true kettle on a stove..
I don't own a microwave it's cancer
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@PepsiColaP How so? It's just using energy to do something same as with any other man made device that transforms energy from one form to another (perhaps multiple times in the case of a mwave - electrical to RF to kinetic to heat). Think about what an insidious device like a phone - it takes chemical energy (battery) and transforms it into electricity then into into light (perhaps also sound) and heat.
@PepsiColaP I test mine for leakage, and usually don't buy food made for a micro. I actually don't use it for much, which is why I have a basic micro. I used to have a convection microwave, which was expensive, however I loved convection cooking with it.
@zonavar68 I'm too bored to go into this I'll watch YouTube now bye
Funlov · M
I try not to use mine much makes food I think taste like shit
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@Funlov Yeah, the taste of those radar waves ARE kind of tart.
@Funlov I'll opt for more conventional reheating methods for certain things like meats. I think the microwaves alter the texture and destroy the flavor. I mean, reheating a steak in a microwave is awful. Soups are a different story as I'm thinking meat saturated in a liquid is being heated by the liquid.
Funlov · M
Yes what a mess
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
Awww man that’s such an awful thing to have explode in the microwave 😭
hunkalove · 70-79, M
Probably Satan.
@hunkalove He could have called first.
No but i nuked a hard boiled egg and it exploded!
sally1981 · 41-45, F
I have often had this happen and it takes ages to clean it all up.
Pissed off.
Zonuss · 46-50, M
Not soup.
Other foods, yes.
@Zonuss I've found meats, like beef roast, to be bothersome.
Zonuss · 46-50, M
@BrewCityBarfly Use a toaster oven. 🙂
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
It would be understandable if it was a consistent phenomenon. But it's not, is it? It happens just rarely enough that it always catches you off guard.
@LordShadowfire I can't recall soup doing this, maybe some popping, not to this extent. It was literally everywhere inside.

I got rid of the microwave many years ago. I was tired of seeing a big mess every time others got done with it. Gave the damn thing away and haven't missed it! lol
I have a nice counter top appliance that will bake, steam, make rice, etc... and many times, I will loosely cover my food and set the appliance to steam. So much nicer than a microwave that kills food. :)
@SW-User It seems like some are looking for alternatives, and I agree, a micro isn't exactly an appliance that can be used for cooking in a conventional sense. I'm intrigued by your appliance, may I ask what model?
SW-User
@BrewCityBarfly Slow Cooker, HOUSNAT 10 in 1 Programmable Cooker, 6Qt Stainless Steel, Rice Cooker, Yogurt Maker, Delay Start, Steaming Rack and Glass Lid, Adjustable Temp&Time for Slow Cook with Digital Timer.

It was a bit expensive but worth it! You can probably find something cheaper but on the same idea. It was what hit me as perfect for here to make whole meals and more. :) I found it a bonus that the inside was also stainless. No coating wearing off and easy to keep clean.
